Job Description
POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under the direction of senior management, this position participates in all reference department functions, including but not limited to reference desk coverage, teaching research in various settings, and making appearances in some classrooms, participating in both the Faculty Liaison and Personal Librarian programs. Position performs originality reviews of papers and SJD theses. Supports selected/ assigned Centers of Excellent subject specialties and related collection development. The Librarian maintains timely and accurate usage statistics for the library’s research databases, as required for annual reports, ALLStAR, US News, and other surveys.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provide quality research support at the reference desk, away from the reference desk, and via chat, phone, or Zoom. Support faculty and student research via reference questions, conducting research consultations, creating LibGuides, and outreach efforts. Serves in the Faculty Liaison program, helps in the Personal Librarian program for students. (26%)Work on the acquisition of electronic research subscription services for the law library in collaboration with the associate director. Acquire, process, and coordinate the review of license agreements working with CALR vendors and university general counsel. Gather and report usage statistics and is a member of the electronic resource management team. Arrange trial subscriptions. (17%)Direct quality services related to plagiarism investigations (originality reviews), promote academic honesty through policy development and communication, presentations to students, faculty training, and consultation services for law faculty and law librarians. (15%)Provide in-person and remote teaching and instructional support to the law school, including LLEAP, Lunch and Learn sessions, one-on-one and group research instruction, and research lectures for courses. (11%)Coordinate aspects of the library’s relationships with consortia and works with the Head of Metadata to ensure that the library catalog, websites, LibGuides, and A-Z List reflect accurate access to available online resources. (8%)Carry out projects and committee work from the library’s strategic planning process. (7%)Develop and cultivate areas of subject specialization. Share subject-matter expertise with professional colleagues through presentations to both internal and external constituencies. (7%)Provide excellent service as one of a team of personal librarians for JD students and the expanded foreign LLM and SJD programs. (6%)

CONTACTS

Department: Frequent contact with faculty of the law school to provide welcome and liaison services, assist with research, and support student instruction. Regular contact with law school administrators to coordinate in school-wide initiatives or services.

University: Regular (daily or weekly) reference contact with other university students and faculty. Moderate contact with professional staff of other campus libraries to coordinate service delivery.

External: Moderate contact with law alumni and other members of the practicing bar, providing reference service. Occasional contact with members of the legal and/or librarianship communities while representing the law school or library in professional organizations or to promote shared interests.

Students: Frequent contact with law students in an instructional role. Frequent contact with law student employees.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Supervises students.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 2 years of professional experience. Prefer experience in an academic law library setting preferred.

Education/Licensing: Masters in Library Science from an ALA accredited school required. J.D. degree from ABA accredited law school strongly preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Familiarity with library systems and technologies preferred. Demonstrable teaching/training experience preferred. Familiarity with legal resources and documents, in a variety of formats, required. Excellent written and oral communication skills.In-depth knowledge of publishing and information markets; research process and library resources.Commitment to excellence in library services, and to improvement of services.Ability to work independently and exercise considerable independent judgment.
