POSITION OBJECTIVEWorking with the help of the principal investigator, the Research Assistant 3 will participate in characterizing a newly uncovered signaling system that regulates angiogenesis and growth factor induction of other cell growth. The novel signaling system is relevant to cancer, nerve regeneration, cardiovascular disease, wound healing, and other conditions. Studies will include analyses of signaling intermediates and co-immunoprecipitations (co-IPs) and immunoblots of the IPs for participating components. The studies also will include transfections of epitope tagged components, analyses of IP’d proteins, and RNAseq assays. All of the specialized assays will be conducted by Core labs. The work in many cases will be done with collaborating labs. Some studies will involve in vitro
cell culture and assays of cells by qPCR, ELISAs, and flow cytometry. Some basic molecular biology work including preparation of plasmids and searches of databases. Some work with murine disease models including cancer conducted with collaborating labs. Training in specialized non-Core techniques will be provided where necessary. The RA3 will help guide students in the lab who are carrying out related projects. Regular lab meetings that will include substantial teaching related to project and reviewing papers of other labs. Where appropriate, coauthoring of manuscripts. This position will work with animals. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Coordinate lab activities and work closely with the principal investigator in designing experiments and analyzing data (Flow, qPCR, siRNA cell culture, western blots, ELISAs). Goal is to generate data for a coauthored paper and for grant applications. (50%)Carry out complex non-routine experiments including confocal analyses, BRET and ChIP. (10%) Devise new protocols and techniques for research projects involving high degree of skill and training. In addition to standard lab techniques above, perform flow cytometry and sorting (Core supported). Will participate in developing multicolor and intracellular staining with help of Flow Cytometry Core (10%)Evaluate adequacy of techniques; study and test new procedures and analyze data. Will suggest modifications of cell growth and IP assays for optimal results. (10%)Assist with managing knockout mouse colonies provide more detail. Routine typing is provided by Veterinary technician and genotyping is provided by a Core lab. Will help in interpreting genotyping, and managing breeding (10%)May supervise students and technicians. Assist new staff and undergraduate students with lab techniques, maintenance of equipment and general lab organization. Participate in ordering and organization of supplies. (10%) Analyze and graph data from experiments. Maintain lab computer where data are stored. Maintain accurate and detailed records of research data. Update electronic databases as needed. Prepare graphics for manuscripts and grants (12%).
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSPerform other duties as assigned, e.g., help in preparation IACUC protocols. Participate in lab meetings. (2%) CONTACTSDepartment: Daily or every other day contact with supervisor to discuss research plan and obtain whatever support is needed.University: Minimal contact outside of ARC staff. External: Minimal contact.Students: Daily availability with graduate and undergraduate researchers in the lab to answer questions. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITYMay supervise students and technicians. QUALIFICATIONSEducation: Bachelor’s degree in related science required.Experience: 3 to 5 years of related experience preferably in biochemistry, immunology and/or molecular biology required. Previous work with mice desired. REQUIRED SKILLS
Advanced computer skills; familiar with MS Office applications, database programs and internet navigation. Computer graphics capability preferred.Familiarity with Molecular biology, cell signaling, qPCR, flow cytometry and cell culture.Professional and effective verbal and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills with the ability to work with various individuals.Strong organizational skills: ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines. Must handle animals with care and respect at all times. Must be able and willing to learn new techniques, procedures, processes and computer gear to protect the health of the animals. Previous experience working with animals preferred. Ability to meet consistent attendance.Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.
WORKING CONDITIONSGeneral laboratory environment. The employee will be exposed to animals and chemicals. Personal protective equipment, including lab coat, gloves and goggles, will be provided to limit exposure to hazards.
