Departmental Objective:The David Student Union at Christopher Newport University goal is to offer exceptional meeting and event accommodations, support the personal and academic development of the University community, and expand the reach of the University to the local, regional, and national spotlight.
Purpose of the Position:Reporting to the Building Manager of the David Student Union through the Maintenance Supervisor, this position will perform simple to moderately complex building maintenance tasks. In addition, this position will ensure the David Student Union, Alumni House and Commons is well-maintained, clean and safe.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) and/or Competencies required and preferred:Required:
Under minimal supervision, must be able to troubleshoot, make repairs and perform maintenance in various trades including simple carpentry, plumbing, HVAC and electrical
Ability to survey a room and assess damages and make repairs
Skilled in the use of hand and power tools
Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions
Ability to communicate effectively with others
Ability to perform heavy manual labor
Ability to resolve most routine questions and be prioritize work-orders
Must be able to know when to refer questions and problems to supervisor
Basic knowledge of electrical work
Ability to be available in an on-call capacity on an as-needed basis
Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Required :Education Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Valid driver’s license.
Experience Required: Experience in building maintenance.
Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Preferred :Education Preferred: Certificate or extensive training in building trades
Experience Preferred: Experience in a college/university setting.

Wage Range:$10.00 - $11.41
Conditions of Employment:This is an HOURLY position and does NOT entitle the incumbent to Commonwealth of Virginia benefits and is limited to 1500 hours in a 365-day period;
Selected candidate must have the ability to be available in an on-call capacity on an as-needed basis;
Selected candidate will be required to attend a 2-Day New Employee Orientation Program.
