General Summary

The Staff Counselor's responsibilities include brief individual, couples and group counseling, assessment, crisis intervention and management, outreach programming and involvement in our training programs. The Staff Counselor will have a passion for working with underrepresented students, which on our campus includes African American, Latinx, LGBTQ, Asian and Asian American students and International students.
The Staff Counselor is a dynamic professional with the skills and creativity to share our commitment to excellence and who would enhance the diversity of our staff and will be a professional with well-developed therapy skills, strong interests in carrying a diverse and large clinical caseload, as well as a strong belief in the mission of comprehensive counseling centers.

Additional Information

Student Counseling Services (SCS) is an integral unit within the Division of Student Affairs at Illinois State University and enjoys strong administrative support from division administration and from the university at large. SCS is the primary designated mental health service on campus and functions as a comprehensive counseling center for a campus population of just over 20,000 students. The center prides itself on proactive efforts to enhance the mental health of individuals, groups, and the campus community as a whole, and has a longstanding reputation for innovation and excellence in the full range of counseling center functions. Many former staff and trainees of the center have become counseling center directors, training directors, researchers, and leading experts in the field of college student mental health.
Notable features of this IACS accredited center include a vibrant and growing group therapy program, an active program evaluation team, highly creative outreach and consultation efforts, and one of the oldest APA accredited internship training programs in a counseling center setting. Administrative support for the center has resulted in a larger than average staff given the size of the university. We have not experienced any furloughs or layoffs in the recent economic downturn, and many of our initiatives to enhance services to students have received strong support. Required Qualifications

1. Master’s degree or doctorate in Social Work, counseling, psychology, or related field required.
2. Must be currently licensed or license-eligible in Illinois as an LCPC, LCSW, LCP, or LMFT within one year of start date.

Desired Qualifications

1. Licensed mental health professionals
2. College/university counseling center experience
3. Strong clinical and outreach skills in the following: triage and crisis management, case management, and suicide prevention.

Work Hours

This job exists in an office environment. The position is a "generalist" position, which means that the individual will perform a variety of tasks, and that the nature of these tasks will change over time. The position requires flexibility in thinking, and ability to manage change. No physical hazards are a part of this position.
