The Research Data Specialist (RDS) for the Center for Prevention Research and Development (CPRD), within the University of Illinois’ School of Social Work, works on the Home Visiting research team to monitor data quality and provide technical assistance and training to Illinois’ 30 agencies implementing the Healthy Families Illinois (HFI) home visiting model. Activities include assisting agencies with data collection, working with agencies to understand and clean their data, holding quarterly data calls with agencies, revising data collection tools, and providing technical assistance and training to agency staff on the interpretation of research findings.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide Technical Assistance, Training, and Support to HFI Agencies on Data Requirements and Data Quality -

  • Work with providers to transfer data to a new data system (Visit Tracker) and assist them to familiarize themselves with data collection requirements and entry into the system.
  • Communicate every month with HFI agencies via email and phone about data questions, data quality, missing data, and issues related to accurate entry of data requirements.
  • Schedule and facilitate formal quarterly phone calls with HFI agency supervisors and home visitors about their data performance (i.e., quality of data, missing data, meeting benchmark outcome goals) and discuss ways for improvement (i.e., resources, training, CQI, supervision).
  • Develop and distribute data communications to HFI agencies with data reminders, updates, insights, and tips for entering data.
  • Prepare and deliver data trainings to all HFI agency staff as needed when there are changes or additions to data collection requirements.
  • Provide training and orientation to new HFI staff on data requirements.
  • Provide ongoing technical assistance to HFI staff and programs on data requirements and the Visit Tracker data system.

Monitor and Analyze Research Data for HFI Agencies -

  • Revise data collection tools and processes annually or as needed.
  • Generate, review, and distribute monthly report cards to HFI agencies.
  • Contribute to established mechanisms to monitor and document HFI data at each agency, including participant demographics and benchmark outcome data, using Tableau, MS Access, Excel, or SPSS.
  • Develop and keep documentation of data quality conversations and action steps for each HFI agency.
  • Analyze information needs to query databases and apply project-specific logic to analyze research data and summarize data output for dissemination.
  • Develop queries for examining and analyzing HFI data, and investigating reasons for out of range or ambiguous data.

Collaborate with External Partners to Update Data Collection Requirements -

  • Develop expertise on the HFI data requirements and data system (Visit Tracker), including understanding of data entry and data retrieval.
  • Collaborate with Visit Tracker data system developers to ensure that the system works well and accurately captures and reports HFI data, including making recommendations for changes.
  • Track and monitor questions/complaints from agencies about data issues related to the Visit Tracker data collection software.

Collaborate with Research Team Members to Meet Research Goals -

  • Work collaboratively with other CPRD HFI Project staff as needed.
  • Work closely with other CPRD HFI staff and management staff to achieve CPRD goals and objectives.

Minimum Education and Work Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Development, Human Services, Education, Social Work, Public Health, Public Administration, Psychology, Human Development, Child Development, or related social science field, and 3+ years of experience working with health or human service projects. Minimum of one year of work in a data assurance or CQI role in a health or human service agency or organization. Expertise in Excel is required and ability to use Tableau, MS Access, and/or SQL is preferred.

Knowledge Requirements:

Understanding of best practices for providing technical assistance and training on data requirements; data analytic approaches; content knowledge and experience of health and human services with understanding of home visiting programs; excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills; ability to work in team environment; knowledgeable about working with diverse populations and cultures (e.g., race/ethnicity, class, gender); knowledge of working in an applied research setting; excellent and demonstrated interpersonal, time management, organization and solution-focused skills.
