Position SummaryPosition Summary

The consultant works with local nonprofits to build their capacity by providing assistance to help improve their management/leadership practices and skills, enhance their resource gathering ability, and foster collaboration with other similar organizations. This is achieved through consultation, training, board development, advocacy, and fostering collaboration.

The work schedule for this position is 20 hours per week. Flexibility is required.

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is an Aspen Prize Top 150 Community College and offers excellent benefits, State Retirement Pension System; wellness programs; free/discounted entry into CSM fitness centers; and generous leave accruals. CSM also offers Code Green Fridays, with early Friday closures during the summer months; and is closed most major holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year; and for several days in March for Spring Break.
Specific Duties and ResponsibilitiesSPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions:

  • Collaborates with Nonprofit Institute team members and other CSM departments to develop programs and services, including the annual conference
  • Develops and delivers training that meets the identified needs of area nonprofits; identify the instructors and ensure the costing and promotion guidelines are met
  • Provides consultation with nonprofits in the areas of management, leadership, fundraising, strategic planning, and marketing.
  • Assists in and encourages collaboration among local nonprofit organizations as a way of reducing overlap and increasing effectiveness
  • Builds and maintains a list of professionals in Southern Maryland (e.g., accountants, attorneys, and marketing consultants) who may be available for assistance
  • Develop content for social media channels and monthly e-newsletter
  • Represent the Nonprofit Institute at conferences, meetings, and other community events
  • Plans and facilitates affinity group meetings
  • Develops data collection tools

Additional Duties:
  • Performs other related work as required Minimum Education and TrainingMINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING

    • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required
    • Previous work experience in the nonprofit sector
    • Experience in strategy, program design and/or capacity building (organizational development) for nonprofits
    • Experience working in diverse communities and across social, economic and cultural differences

  • Proven ability to establish collaborative relationships with stakeholders

  • Understanding of current issues and trends in the nonprofit sector
  • Ability to coordinate a broad range of activities and projects
    Physical Requirements:

    The work is sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly.
