Applicants are expected to have a PhD in chemical, biological, environmental or materials engineering or in applied chemistry, biology, computer science, computer engineering or a related field at the time of appointment. Postdoctoral or industrial experience is an asset. The successful candidate will have a clearly demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching, as well as innovation in research and teaching.

We seek candidates with outstanding expertise in the development and application of Data Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) or quantum computing methodologies to chemical and biochemical systems and whose research and teaching complement and strengthen our existing strengths in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry. Areas of application for the candidate’s research may include, but are not limited to, chemical, biochemical and materials processing, sustainable energy/manufacturing/materials, environmental science and engineering, chemical/biomolecular modelling, polymers, catalysis, reaction engineering, transport phenomena, advanced separations, regenerative medicine, protein engineering, genomics, bioinformatics, systems biology, forest products, self-driving laboratories, surface and interface engineering.

The candidate’s expertise should complement our existing strengths in various centres and institutes, including: the Centre for Analytics and Artificial Intelligence Engineering (CARTE); The Vector Institute; the Acceleration Consortium; BioZone; the Institute for Sustainable Energy; the Institute for Water Innovation, the Centre for Management of Technology and Entrepreneurship; and the Pulp and Paper Centre, among many other centres at the University of Toronto. A significant track record and interest in collaboration across multiple disciplines is a key element of the position.

The successful candidate will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead an outstanding, innovative, independent, externally funded research program of international calibre, and teach in the chemical engineering curriculum at the undergraduate and post-graduate level. Collaborative and inter-disciplinary research and collegial interaction will be important elements in success. Eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer in Ontario is a desirable qualification.

Excellence in research is evidenced primarily by sustained and impactful publications in leading journals or significant conferences, the submitted research statement, distinguished awards and accolades, other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, and a high profile in their field with strong endorsements by referees of high international standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by the statement of teaching philosophy, teaching accomplishments, and a teaching dossier including sample course materials and teaching evaluations as well as strong letters of reference.

Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) are essential to academic excellence and to the success of our department. Evidence of a commitment to EDI will be demonstrated by a statement describing views, experiences and/or plans furthering EDI via teaching mentorship, outreach, and/or other activities.
