Post-Doctoral Research Associate - Materials Science & EngineeringRegular, Full-time, Pay Grade 00The University of Tennessee is pleased to announce an immediate opening for a post-doctoral research associate in metallurgy.  The position will focus on measuring high-temperature thermophysical properties of U-Mo and U-Nb alloys.  Techniques include TGA/DSC, viscometry, and XRF measurements. Familiarity with other characterization techniques such as scanning and transmission electron microscopy are also desired.  Excellent written, as evidenced by a prolific publication record, and oral communication skills are necessary. 

Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  1. Set up a lab to measure the the high-temperature thermophysical properties of U-Mo and U-Nb including TGA/DSC, viscometry, and XRF measurements.
  2. Develop appropriate protocols for characterizing the alloys. 
  3. Write reports on the composition dependent properties of the U-Mo and U-Nb alloys and correlate them to the equilibrium phase diagrams.

Minimum Requirements:

A PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or a related field is required; candidates that are finishing their degree will also be considered; however, those candidates cannot start work until they have fully completed all doctorate requirements and can provide education verification.  The candidate will be advised by Philip D. Rack at the University of Tennessee and scientists at the Y-12 National Security Complex. 

Importantly, the position requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status.  The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy “Q” clearance is required.
