The University of Virginia School of Education and Human Development's Center to Promote Effective Youth Development (Youth-Nex), and the Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) is seeking a Research Assistant Professor (non-tenure track) to support a series of research and program activities related to middle school and developmental science (with a focus on early adolescence). This position will be split across Youth-Nex (70%) and CASTL (30%).
Duties and Responsibilities:
1- Faculty program lead for the Remaking Middle School (RMS) initiative, including strategic direction and oversight for RMS, helping to design content for and lead the RMS design lab, overseeing implementation of the RMS research infrastructure, building research-to-practice system for integrating research findings into continuous improvement efforts for partner schools, expanding work with local middle schools and building partnership with local lab school (including building out empirical case studies to contribute to the field), and grant writing to support RMS research (55% time).
2- Providing leadership and support for development of a professional certification program in early adolescence/middle school for teachers and youth development professionals. Includes working with team to develop curricular content for certification program, building evaluation plan for program outcomes, and the potential for teaching courses in the certification program if interested (15% time).
3- Co-leading efforts on with Valor Collegiate and Compass programs, both of which are programs focused on helping schools build relationship-based communities of trust. The work involves producing recommendations for continuous improvement and building the evidence base for these programs. Involves working with collaborators at Transcend and Valor, making research design and measurement decisions, testing novel approaches to data collection (e.g., Experience Sampling Method, Social Network Analysis), providing guidance to several students, guiding data collection decisions, preparing collaborative reports and manuscripts, and co-writing grants for future work (30% time).
Required Experiences and Qualifications:
Education: All candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, Applied Developmental Science, or a related field by the start date of the position.
Two years postdoctoral training (equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of postdoctoral training).
Prior experience conducting analyses for, writing, and submitting peer-reviewed journal articles is required.
Prior experience communicating research findings to educators.
The ideal candidate is an early career researcher with a track record of school-based research partnerships focused on the middle school years (grades 5-8) and early adolescence.
A commitment to equity in scholarship and teaching and an interest in working collaboratively with faculty and students at all levels is required.
A minimum of two years of experience working within research-practice partnerships with schools.
Demonstrated skills and abilities in translating the science of early adolescence for educators is required.
Demonstrated ability to work with educators to make research findings actionable in schools and classrooms.
Substantive understanding of psychological and educational research literature in early adolescent development, middle level education, and equity and diversity in educational contexts.
Preferred Experiences and Qualifications:
Three years postdoctoral training preferred or equivalent experience.
Potential for outstanding research commensurate with a Research I institution and demonstrated ability to translate research for practitioner and youth audiences is essential.
Interest and experience in working on translational and community-engaged scholarship, experience with multi-disciplinary research teams, and demonstrated ability to take leadership and deliver on projects and mentor undergraduate and/or graduate students is highly preferred.
Prior experience developing content and contributing to submission of a federal or private grant proposal is preferred.
Expertise in mixed methods and qualitative methods is preferred.
Physical Demands: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
