Department Head Position
The Carnegie Mellon University College of Engineering announces a worldwide search for the next Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME).
An accomplished academic leader is sought to provide strategic vision and outstanding operational management, to oversee high-quality research and educational programs, and to guide the BME community to the next level of accomplishment and impact. The BME Department Head will maintain and strengthen the culture of collaboration and innovation internal and external to the department; enhance the reputation of the department; lead the department in strategic planning; have a proven track record in and vision for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion at the department and institutional levels; and demonstrate a commitment to a high-quality student experience.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon was formed in 2002, building on a base of innovation in biomedical engineering education and research begun at the university in 1967 with the establishment of an interdisciplinary Biotechnology Program. The department currently has 20 core faculty members, of whom 10 are jointly appointed with other departments within Carnegie Mellon. It has an additional 44 affiliated faculty members from various departments and colleges within Carnegie Mellon, providing a broad range of expertise for our students. The department also has 16 adjunct faculty members, including many physicians who teach courses and facilitate clinical opportunities in medical facilities around the Pittsburgh area. Educational offerings include BS, MS, and PhD programs, as well as an MD/PhD program offered jointly with the University of Pittsburgh. Our student population boasts about 243 undergraduates (all pursuing the BS in BME as an additional major or minor) and 101 graduate students, approximately evenly split between PhD and MS students.
Research in Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon is characterized by interdisciplinary collaborations, reflecting the culture of the college and university. Research activities include computational and experimental methods that span fundamental science to technology development for clinical translation. Current research foci include biomaterials and nanotechnology; cell and tissue engineering; biomedical imaging and signal processing; medical devices and robotics; and neuroengineering. Individuals with expertise across a wide range of areas related to biomedical engineering will be considered. Applicants must have earned a PhD in a field of engineering or science closely related to biomedical engineering. Teaching experience and an internationally recognized record of research are essential. Applicants must be qualified for an appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure.
