Occupational Summary

The Center for Virtual Imaging Trials (CVIT) is seeking a candidate to fill the position of Analyst Programmer II. The Center aims to develop and provide a comprehensive virtual platform to assess the clinical performance of medical imaging technologies or applications from design to use. In its first phase, the Center focuses on Computed Tomography (CT). The Center will provide essential resources to optimize the design and use of CT technologies for improved human health.

The individual oversees the activities of the center’s hardware and software and is to administer the software infrastructure of the Center alongside and under the supervision of Center senior software developer. CVIT is expected to develop and maintain a high-quality software product, consistent with best software practices and expectations. There is an existing base of working software currently running in the Center. This includes codes to create voxelized phantoms, code to create CT images from these phantoms and code to evaluated image fidelity, with each category having several individual programs. The individual is to refine, integrate, and add to this existing base.

This manger will also act as a liaison between Duke and the Center regarding computational issues. The person will coordinate activities related to new software development and new hardware purchases and see that the Center’s computational needs are met.

Work Performed

The duties of the position include the following:

Develop software writing, testing, tracking standards.

Bring existing code into compliance with the Center’s standards.

Create test suites for each program.

Create documentation for each program.

Oversee hardware acquisition and integration.

Assure compliance with Duke security standards.

Shepherd the coding contribution of students.

Analyze the in-house software/algorithms enhancements.

Curate software from external and internal users.

Participate in additional technical projects as needed.

Generate new programs (starting from year 2).

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in mathematics or computer science or a computer-related field or equivalent coursework or technical training.

Experience:

Minimum requirement of two years applications programming experience with some responsibility for systems design and supervision or project coordination.

Addition Preferences:

  • 2+ years of software development experience with a focus on healthcare.
  • 2+ years of experience with
  • 4+ yrs of Linux C/C++/Cmake experience.
  • 2+ yrs of Python experience.
  • 2+ yrs of software testing/tracking – preferably with git.
  • 1+ yrs NVIDIA Cuda C++ interface experience.
  • 1+ yrs Docker/Container experience.
  • Familiarity with computer imaging – preferably medical images (DICOM/HL7/PACS)

The following would be a plus:

  • Experience with Linux administration (prefer RedHat/CentOS).
  • Good knowledge of TCI/IP network architecture.
  • Experience with computer cluster design.
  • Experience with Docker Swarm or Kubernetes.
  • Experience with GPU administration.

The ideal candidate will possess deep domain knowledge of and interest in the mission of the Center, understand the research community’s interactions with the Center, be motivated to learn new software techniques, and have the ability to understand the technical/scientific issues the software presents.

Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892, where Benjamin Newton Duke served as a primary benefactor and link with the Duke family until his death in 1929. In December 1924, the provisions of indenture by Benjamin’s brother, James B.
