Position description
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese seeks a pool of renewable, non‐tenure track lecturers to teach Portuguese language and upper-division Portuguese literature and culture courses.

Due to COVID 19 UC Berkeley may begin the fall semester with fully remote instruction. UC Berkeley is prepared to implement hybrid and/or flexible modes of instruction as soon as public health conditions allow. Remote instruction requires an online course to be designed from the outset for delivery via distance-learning methods. Instructors must have internet access and be prepared to adjust pedagogical approaches with a remote setting and use new teaching tools. Department policy requires instructors to create and maintain a bcourses site.

In addition to instruction, general duties include holding office hours, developing syllabi and assignments, writing and grading exams, and grading and commenting on papers. Other duties may be assigned by the Chair as necessary.

The number of positions varies from semester to semester, and appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance. Typically, the Department reviews applications for summer and fall teaching in February/March, and applications for spring teaching in October/November. Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester (in mid-January for Spring Semester; in mid-August for Fall Semester). Summer appointments begin in late May and run into early August.

Basic Qualifications (by the time of application): Completed master's degree (or equivalent international degree) is required to teach both language and literature/culture courses.

Preferred Qualifications:
Native or near-native fluency in Portuguese and English.
Experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level in the U.S.

For language instruction: Demonstrated excellence in teaching, familiarity with college-level language programs, and relevant teaching experience using current language-teaching methodologies.

For literature/culture instruction: Demonstrated expertise and relevant teaching experience in Lusophone literature and culture, with possible emphasis on cultural production from Brazil, Portugal or Luso-Africa, including literature and cinema.

For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment). The Program is unable to provide a visa/work permit.

Salary is based on an annual full-time salary rate of a minimum of $56,381 for positions ranging from 33% to 100% each semester. Actual salary will be commensurate with college level teaching experience. All positions are located on the UC Berkeley Campus.

Applications must be submitted online https://aprecruit.berkeley.edu/JPF02874. Questions may be directed to gspaacad@berkeley.edu.

While only contact information for three references is required at the time of application, the Department may later request letters from finalists' references. If requested, all letters will be treated as confidential per University of California policy and California state law. Please refer potential referees, including when letters are provided via a third party (i.e., dossier service or career center), to the UC Berkeley statement of confidentiality https://apo.berkeley.edu/ucb-confidentiality-policy prior to submitting their letters.
