The Interdisciplinary Social Sciences Program (ISSP) at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a temporary lecturer to teach Political Economy and Global Studies. Positions may range from 33% to 100% time, with the start date at the beginning of the spring, summer or fall semester.

Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the department.

Due to Covid-19, courses taught during the spring semester will be taught remotely. During the summer and fall of 2021, courses may be taught remotely, in-person, or via a hybrid model, as required by county and state public health guidelines. Remote instruction may be synchronous, asynchronous, or a combination of both. Instructors must have internet access and be prepared to adjust pedagogical approaches with a remote setting and use new teaching tools.

The ISSP offers two interdisciplinary undergraduate majors: Political Economy and Global Studies. In addition, it houses the interdisciplinary Global Studies graduate program.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: Teaching one or more of the following courses:
  • World History: a survey course in modern world history, with an emphasis on political economy;
  • Classical Theories of Political Economy;
  • Contemporary Theories of Political Economy;
  • Special topics in Political Economy, such as development, globalization, inequality, poverty, and policy-related issues;
  • Special topics in Global Studies, such as humanities-related issues;
  • Regional courses (example, Africa, Asia, Middle East, etc.) that address global themes;
  • Interdisciplinary approaches to global studies;
  • Critical Thinking and/or Theories and Methods courses;
  • Thesis writing courses.

    In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties may include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g. syllabus), writing exams, interacting with students outside of class time via email and/or a course web site, and managing teaching assistants.

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Required at time of application: Advancement to candidacy in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program.
    ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: Required by start date: A PhD (or equivalent international degree). At least one year of experience teaching college-level courses.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: PhD in the fields of history, political science, economics, sociology, or geography. Academic experience with Political Economy, Global Studies, and/or interdisciplinary approaches to research or regional studies. A commitment to, and experience with, undergraduate teaching. Ability to communicate effectively and contribute to diversity and equal opportunity.

    SALARY: $56,381 minimum full-time annual salary base; actual salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Positions may range from 33% to 100% time per academic term.

    UC Lecturers are academic appointees in an organized bargaining unit and are exclusively represented by American Federation of Teachers - Unit 18.
