Lecturer - Molecular & Cell Biology - MCB 2021-2022
The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) at UC Berkeley invites applications for a pool of full-time or part-time, temporary non-tenure track Lecturer positions to teach MCB courses as the need arises. Screening of applicants begins immediately and will continue as needed. Applicants will be selected from this pool for one calendar year, beginning with the Spring 2021 semester. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending upon the needs of MCB. Vacancies may arise during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester, and appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.
Due to COVID 19 UC Berkeley will begin the spring semester with fully remote instruction. UC Berkeley is prepared to implement hybrid and/or flexible modes of instruction as soon as public health conditions allow. Remote instruction may be synchronous, asynchronous, or a combination of both. Instructors must have internet access and be prepared to adjust pedagogical approaches with a remote setting and use new teaching tools.
We are seeking outstanding lecturers who can teach/co-teach small, medium and large size lecture, seminar and/or laboratory courses in the subject areas listed below: Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology
Cell & Developmental Biology
Genetics, Genomics and Development
Immunology and Pathogenesis
In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), maintaining a course website, and using a learning management system( e.g. bCourses at UC Berkeley, Canvas, etc.).
Minimum Basic Qualifications (by the time of application):
Laboratory Courses and Lecturer Courses: A Master's degree (or equivalent international degree) is required by the time of application.
Lecture Courses: A Ph.D. degree (or equivalent international degree) is required to teach a lecture course by the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications (by start date):
Lecture Courses: Documented experience in teaching one of the biological or life sciences at the college level.
Laboratory Courses: Completion of all Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) requirements except dissertation in a biological field or life sciences is also satisfactory.
Minimum annual full-time salary rate of $57,507. Salary will be commensurate with experience and percentage will be calculated based on number of lecture hours required. Some credit given to prior college-level teaching experience (not including graduate student or summer session teaching).
Appointments for fall semesters are usually reviewed in May, and finalists are selected once funding is confirmed for the next academic year. Spring appointments are reviewed in October. Reviews for summer appointments are in January.
