Howard Community College (HCC), located in Columbia, Maryland, seeks a dynamic, visionary leader who will play a central role in shaping the success, growth, and future as its next president. HCC is the primary hub for higher learning in one of the most outstanding, best-educated counties in Maryland. This presidency offers an exceptional opportunity to lead an institution proud to serve its community and to provide pathways to success for individuals whose life goals can be realized through education.

The next president will follow Dr. Kathleen Hetherington, who will retire October 1, 2021, after 14 years as president and 22 years of highly distinguished service to the college. An advocate for community colleges, Dr. Hetherington is the fourth president in the college’s history and the first to have graduated from a community college.

A public community college, HCC is located in the heart of Columbia, a diverse and vibrant community founded on the ideal of becoming “a garden for growing people.” HCC offers associate degree and certificate programs to more than 14,000 credit students annually, leading to transfer to four-year colleges or to immediate employment upon graduation. Approximately 39 percent of all Howard County undergraduates attend HCC, and the college is the top choice for graduating high school seniors in Howard County, outperforming its four-year university competitors in drawing recent graduates from the public school system. Additionally, over 12,000 students take noncredit courses for professional development or personal enrichment.

The most competitive presidential candidates will be those individuals who embrace the college’s spirit of innovation and performance excellence and who demonstrate a track record of leadership success in harmony with HCC’s culture and achievements.

Applicants who have substantial senior-level leadership experience in community colleges will be highly competitive. Extraordinary leaders from the four-year college and university higher education sectors and other professional walks of life are also invited to become candidates, provided they demonstrate experiences and aptitudes responsive to the elements described in the position profile. An advanced degree is required; a terminal degree is preferred.

A complete position profile may be found at https://www.agbsearch.com/active-searches. Further information about the presidential search and Howard Community College may be found at www.howardcc.edu/presidentialsearch.

The Presidential Search Committee will begin reviewing candidate materials in late July. Although applications will be received until the position is filled, materials should be submitted by August 10, 2021, to receive the most favorable consideration. Final selection will be made in October, and the new president will be invited to begin work shortly after that date.

Applications must include a letter of candidacy that responds directly to the position profile; a complete CV or resume; and the names, phone numbers, and email addresses of five references, none of whom will be contacted without permission of the candidate.

All application materials will be received in full confidence and should be submitted electronically to: HCCPresidentSearch@agbsearch.com.

Please address the letter of candidacy to Ms. Felícita Solá-Carter, Chair, Presidential Search Committee. Confidential inquiries and nominations should be directed to:
