General Summary

The Graduate Assistant in the Dean of Students (DOS) Office will assist with the resolution of non-academic sensitive student concerns and needs, with a focus on issues of food and housing security. This person will work closely with the DOS Case Manager and the Student Intervention Team in overall case management, assisting with responses that balance the needs of individual students with the safety and welfare of the University community.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

? Assist with resolution and prevention of both academic and non-academic concerns.
? Collaborate and establish partnerships with designated university departments to promote awareness, and educate the campus community on subject matters within the assigned unit.
? Respond to walk-ins and phone calls related to student issues to assess their immediate or emergency needs, and provide crisis consultation services in cooperation with the Case Manager as needed.
? Identify University and community resources available to University students experiencing food insecurity and/or homelessness.
? Provides referrals to appropriate health and social service agencies for additional services as required.
? Obtain and review updates on distressed students and facilitate the flow of information between appropriate offices.
? Assist referred students in making use of University and/or community resources and services.
? Provide one-on-one consultation with students seeking guidance and resolving educational and personal challenges as assigned.
? Manage and make appropriate referrals to on-campus resources and community-based resources.
? Coordinate and implement recommendations provided by the case management team regarding students in distress.
? Coordinate follow-up and tracking of students in distress to monitor progress and ensure compliance with recommendations; maintains confidential student records.
? Completes documentation and maintains record keeping of student cases in Advocate, an electronic database.

Administrative:
? Assist in collection of assessment data; preparing reports and presentations on the student of concern process.
? Document student contacts and assist in the record-keeping process for students of concern, including the electronic database system.
? Follow up on cases, monitoring progress through resolution.
? Assist in preparation of weekly, monthly, and annual reports of services.
? Assist in the development and maintenance of the website, links, brochures, communication, etc.
? Assist in reviewing and developing policies, procedures, and training to support the successful operations of the DOS Office.
? Assist with assessing outcomes and develop strategies for improving services, programs, facilities, and communication.


Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Pursuit of a Master’s Degree in social work, psychology, college student personnel, higher education and student affairs, or a related field is required.
  • Proficiency in recognizing, problem-solving, and responding flexibly to highly sensitive situations as they arise with sound judgment and confidentiality.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
