The University of California Police Department provides a full range of law enforcement services in support of the academic and public service missions of the University of California, serving a diverse community of more than 43,000 students and 14,000 faculty & staff in the vibrant City of Berkeley, at the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to the traditional role of a police department, we also carry out a variety of proactive educational, outreach and crime prevention programs. Responsibilities

Security Patrol Officers (SPO), are full-time, non-sworn career employees of the University Police Department. SPOs provide high profile, uniformed public safety services on campus and other nearby sites owned or controlled by the University. SPOs provide premise security, engage in preventive patrols in vehicles, on bicycles, and on foot, and perform other support tasks for the police department.

Responsibilities include:
  • Handle routine and emergency calls for service, and respond to certain types of alarms
  • Work at strategic stationary posts, in order to control access and provide public safety or other assistance to the public
  • Provide for the safety of persons and property at University special events and can be called upon to assist with transportation, booking, and searching of prisoners
  • Make written reports and issue certain types of citations as necessary
  • Report security violations or hazardous conditions, and are expected to take action to correct situations or to ensure that correction takes place
  • Shift work, including night and weekend assignments, is required

Required Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years of age at time of appointment
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license
  • Must have excellent communication skills and good judgment under pressure
  • Applicants may be required to provide proof they have a legal right to work permanently in the United States
  • Applicants convicted of felonies or serious misdemeanors will not be considered, and successful candidates are subject to an extensive background investigation

HOURS:
Work hours and days off are subject to change based upon SPO program operational needs and at the discretion of the SPO program manager based upon department needs. It is important to maintain a flexible work schedule in order to ensure the SPO program can meet its obligations and accomplish its mission.

Salary & Benefits

  • Hiring is contingent on successful completion of a background investigation, and medical evaluation/drug screen.
  • This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Service Unit (SX) between the University of California and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This is a designated position requiring fingerprinting and a background check due to the nature of the job responsibilities. Berkeley does hire people with conviction histories and reviews information received in the context of the job responsibilities. This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter required to report the observed or suspected abuse or neglect of children, dependent adults, or elders to designated law enforcement or social service agencies.
