Earth Lab at the University of Colorado, Boulder is encouraging applications for a Community Manager and Developer Advocate to facilitate the creation of an inclusive pyOpenSci community that is dedicated to high-quality Python open source software that supports open science workflows. pyOpenSci promotes the development of open, peer-reviewed, standardized, well-documented, discoverable software for working with scientific data. pyOpenSci also builds capacity to contribute to open source software through outreach, training and mentorship. pyOpenSci will strive to increase participation of groups that have been traditionally underrepresented if not missing from the open source community through both mentorship and strategic partnerships with existing organizations such as pyLadies, geoLatinas, and others.

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about Python open source software, excited to drive the pyOpenSci mission, has experience managing large online communities and facilitating outreach activities and developing partnerships, and is committed to increasing diversity in the scientific open source software community. This is a full-time position with benefits and a market-based salary.

This position will report to the Director of the Earth Analytics Education Initiative. Review of applications will begin on July 15th, 2021 and applications will be accepted until the position is filled. This position is grant funded with current funds allocated through June 2023. Assuming project success during the first two years, we will seek additional funding to extend the work beyond June 2023. This position is located in Boulder, Colorado. At CIRES, the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, more than 800 environmental scientists work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people’s relationship with the planet (https://cires.colorado.edu/). Earth Lab, funded by the University of Colorado Boulder’s “Grand Challenge: Our Space, Our Future” and part of CIRES, seeks post-doctoral researchers to join a dynamic team pushing the frontiers of coupled Earth and social system science (http://www.colorado.edu/earthlab/). Earth Lab’s mission is to harness the data revolution through research, analytics, and education to accelerate understanding of global environmental change to help society better manage and adapt.

The Earth Analytics Education program is a part of CU Boulder’s Earth Lab. The education program provides 21st century, collaborative, scientific discovery skills through open online lessons, courses, degree options, and tools. We are also committed to increasing diversity in STEM. Our programs focus on developing data intensive science skills, teaching students to integrate heterogeneous data, create efficient and reproducible scientific workflows, collaborate on scientific projects, and perform scientific data processing, visualization, and analysis. pyOpenSci is a community that develops processes and standards for the creation and maintenance of Python packages, streamlines and diversifies peer review of OSS through mentorship and training, and builds an inclusive and diverse community around the use of open source Python for science. pyOpenSci is hosted by the University of Colorado, Boulder - Earth Lab Earth Analytics Education Initiative within the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES).

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Community Management

• Build and manage an active, diverse, and inclusive online pyOpenSci community by staying informed of the needs and motivations of current and prospective members and responding with programming that meets these needs.
• Facilitate regular communication with pyOpenSci community members.
• Organize, plan, and drive participation at community building events, both virtual and in-person, that provide positive and valuable interactions for members, consistent with pyOpenSci’s mission.
• Lead diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts to ensure that pyOpenSci members from all backgrounds are supported and empowered to participate. This will include the development of a mentorship program for underrepresented groups in open source.
• Solicit new packages for review as well as identify and facilitate the resolution of potential hold ups in the review process.

External Communications

• Cultivate strategic relationships with new and existing partner organizations. Current partners include JOSS, rOpenSci, Pangeo, the Software Sustainability Institute, the Carpentries, and 2i2c.
• Represent pyOpenSci at professional events aimed at fostering new partnerships, increasing membership, and building awareness surrounding organizational efforts.

Content Creation

• Grow pyOpenSci’s online presence through content creation and management for multiple platforms (e.g. social media, discussion forums, Slack, blogs, and GitHub).
• Identify and fill gaps in pyOpenSci’s web resources, including our Contributing Guide.

What You Should Know

• This position is currently funded through June of 2023 with the possibility of extension based on performance and the availability of funding.

What We Can Offer

• CIRES can offer a generous compensation package. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.
• The annual hiring salary range for this position is $60,000.00 - $75,000.00.

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as science, mathematics, engineering, or computer science.
• 2+ years of experience working with and managing communities that support open source projects or the data science space as an evangelist, advocate, or organizer.
• Significant experience programming with Python and developing or contributing to the development of open source software.

What You Will Need

• Knowledge of social media platforms and tools (specifically Twitter) and ability to foster online engagement.
• Strong desire to deepen your knowledge of best practices for DEI efforts and demonstrated experience working in the DEI space.
• Ability to work in a distributed, collaborative team environment - including managing ambiguity, concurrent projects, and work taking place across multiple time zones.
• Excellent time and project management skills.
• Outstanding oral and written communication skills. These skills will be applied to various areas including website and blog content creation, conflict resolution, technical writing, and external communication at conference presentations.
• Strong interpersonal skills. Ideally, you have experience cultivating trust through active listening and responsive dialogue to support members in feeling welcome and supported in joining and actively participating in the community.
• Creative, motivated problem-solver, with an ability to bring forth new ideas for engagement, create systems from scratch, and find new partners.
