The Department of Anesthesiology has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Business Services Manager/Clinical Business Manager position.

Jobs in this career family provide general business operations of the organization or a combination of operational responsibilities covering multiple career families.  Functions include institutional research, statistical analysis, policy development and review, strategic planning and broad unit business operations such as parking and transportation services, risk management, childcare services, real estate and property management, retail services or job responsibilities that combine fiscal, HR and operational management responsibilities.

Managers are responsible for the day-to-day operation of functional work units, including the development and implementation of processes consistent with college, school or departmental strategies and processes and the supervision of professional and support staff.

The Clinical Business Manager in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is responsible for managing the administrative, operational and financial activities of the Adult Clinical Mission for the Department of Anesthesiology (“Department”). The Manager implements and manages the Department’s fiscal affairs and day-to-day operations in support of the Department’s and school’s clinical mission and goals.  This role is responsible for the operational systems and processes in support of the Department’s clinical efforts.  The Manager will understand and navigate the complexities of clinical care at multiple hospitals and contracts from various hospitals in order to successfully manage and execute a variety of clinical administrative responsibilities. The Clinical Business Manager has responsibility for managing the overall financial aspects of the clinical mission of the Department.

Under the authority of the Director of Finance & Administration, this role will both directly supervise revenue cycle personnel, as well as indirect supervision of the Department’s Financial Coordinator, Data Analyst, and Administrative Assistants that support the clinical mission staff. The Clinical Business Manager will also collaboratively supervise with and/or give feedback to the Department’s HR Manager, Education Manager, the CHCO Administrator, and the Department’s Research Program Director with respect to the performance of human resource, fiscal, and research staff. 

Duties include but are not limited to:

Financial Management: All financial management activities are under the direction of the Director of Finance & Administration who has overall responsibility for divisional and departmental funds, serves as the Fund Administrator and overall approving official.  Within these parameters, the Clinical Business Manager:

  • Prepares budgets, controls and monitors revenue and expenditure activity for each source of funds.  Budgeting and financial management occurs in multiple fiscal systems including the state, CU Medicine as well as multiple hospitals and other entities, including UCH.
  • Manages fiscal activity of the Department’s clinical efforts including, but not limited to, development and management of operating and capital budgets, administration of hospital contracts, purchasing, travel, and inventory management.
  • Manages all clinical revenue cycle processes and reporting within the Department to ensure proper billing, insurance payments, accounts receivable, and adherence to relevant policies. Works closely with CU Medicine liaison team on revenue cycle management.
  • Manages the analysis and interpretation of clinical financial information and develops related operational plans.
  • Utilizes standard University, Department and other systems for accounting and data processing as necessary for financial management and statistical reporting.
  • Prepares faculty salary data and sources of funds for annual salary recommendation process and responds to requests from the Director of Finance & Administration for fiscal budgetary information.
  • Monitors physician services billing and collection activity where appropriate and coordinates all related activity with the Director of Finance & Administration.
  • Administers the flow of administrative, financial and workload statistical data and reporting for the section.
  • Develops long-range forecasts and maintains long-range financial plans.
  • Works directly with Department faculty to regularly review applicable financial reports.
  • Monitors trends and identify areas of need for targeted practice building.
Leadership:

  • Integrates with senior leadership in the Department to help develop strategy and operational planning for clinical care services within the Department.
  • Responsible for establishing and managing effective revenue cycle processes to ensure financial accuracy for all clinical activity within the Department’s adult practice.
  • Shares responsibility for projection of clinical programs, revenues and expenses, personnel needs and facility needs.
  • Participate on Departmental committees as requested. 
  • Coordinate and lead, with senior leaders, various faculty meetings focused on operations and finances
  • Create performance plans and complete annual evaluations for direct reports  
Clinical Business Administration:

  • Develops and implements effective, efficient, and regulatory-compliant administrative, financial, and operational clinical systems and processes.
  • Develops and maintains processes and data systems to track and report on clinical FTE, as required by CU Medicine and for reporting to various entities.
  • Serve as an administrative “super user” of QGenda, our clinical scheduling system.
  • Prepares reports for the Department or others as requested to satisfy needs such as audits, annual reports, board reports, etc.
  • Oversees and monitors clinical support staff purchasing activity to ensure compliance with CU Medicine and UCD policies. 
  • Oversees salary allocation/distributions on appropriate CU Medicine administrative and/or contractual funds.
  • Conducts and/or facilitates internal audits as needed.
General:

  • Shows initiative to identify and implement ways to improve the job and surroundings.
  • Performs other related duties and procedures, including special projects, as directed by the DFA.
  • Serves as a back-up during staff absences and vacancies, as necessary.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $60,171-$80,000

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in business, business administration, finance, accounting, education, social sciences, healthcare administration, public administration, communications, information systems, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.

Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.

The position requires extensive, diverse and progressively responsible experience at the management level, including direct responsibility for the administrative, operational and financial activities of a clinical program.

Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in business administration, finance, healthcare administration, public administration, or a directly related field from an accredited institution
  • 2-4 years of progressive experience in similar role/duties is preferred
  • Experience working in an academic medical center
  • Proficiency with PeopleSoft (HCM &/or Finance)
  • Experience with QGenda
  • Experience supervising staff
  • Experience with CU Medicine reporting systems such as AX and MyBI
