General Description:

The Student Success Coach provides guidance to students starting with the decision to enroll college, assistance with the admissions and financial aid processes, understanding and solving issues that stand in the way of successful enrollment, re-enrollment and credential or degree completion. The Coach works with students helping them acclimate to the college culture, assess and triage student issues throughout their college experience at MCC while connecting students with essential resources such as tutoring, financial literacy tools including financial aid resources, career services, counseling, disability services, faculty, student life activities and community resources to assist with things like transportation, housing and/or food insecurity and other basic needs. They will also help assist with accessing student portals, learning management systems and degree planning, career exploration and other learning tools. The Student Success Coach is part of the Office of Student Success and supports the organization in executing its strategic and tactical plans.

Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  1. Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in human services.
  2. Higher education experience preferred.
  3. Ability to effectively partner with students, faculty, and staff, including those from diverse backgrounds.
  4. Previous experience demonstrating strong leadership abilities, influencing others in a positive manner while achieving goals, and effectively communicating and generating support for ideas.
  5. Ability to serve independently and analytically, exercise discretion and good judgment.
  6. Demonstrated use of tact, judgement and discretion, and to relate to people of all ages, races, and social-economic backgrounds.
  7. Demonstrated excellence in both oral and written communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  8. High proficiency in demonstration of office technology, software, & equipment. Ability and willingness to upgrade skills including technology or process changes.
  9. Ability to manage multiple projects with strong planning and organizational skills.
  10. Willingness to handle complex and detail-oriented tasks and projects.
  11. High energy, creativity, ability to assume responsibility.
  12. Ability to take initiative and facilitate coaching activities within the community college setting
  13. Highly motivated and solution oriented with a high degree of integrity, ethics and dedication to the mission of the college.

Essential Functions:

  1. Promote retention and completion for students by monitoring educational progress, engaging in proactive outreach, and assisting with reactive interventions as needed.
  2. Provide coaching and mentoring to student during their experience at MCC, approaching student challenges with empathy and competence.
  3. Work closely with department to implement a student intake survey for students, and analyze data from survey to suggest/implement better ways to assist our student population.
  4. Work with students who are at-risk or facing barriers to their academic success, including assisting with financial aid and providing appropriate referrals to other relevant college resources.
  5. Organize and facilitate small-group interactions to model community-building and facilitate campus acclimation for students
  6. Ensure each student registers for subsequent semester of coursework.
  7. Learning about and connecting students in their cohort to both college and community services/resources that provide support to students to assist them in overcoming barriers to completion.
  8. Establish productive collegial relationships with professional staff, faculty and administration at your host campus.
  9. Assist in the assessment and long-term sustainability of the adult students on campus.
  10. Assist with the identification, collection, and interpretation of key progress and outcome data to evaluate the effectiveness of adult college students including but not limited to:
    • Time and frequency of student interactions
    • Completion of key program benchmarks
    • Debt forgiveness
    • Recommend additional supports to campus staff that may assist with student completion
    • Use data in decision making and submit monthly progress reports documenting progress and output data to staff, potential supporters and other interested parties.
  11. Build and maintain expertise in completion coaching and student success.
  12. Other duties as assigned.
