Princeton University

Princeton Arts Fellowships support artists whose achievements have been recognized as demonstrating extraordinary promise in any area of artistic practice and teaching. The Lewis Center is designed to put the creative and performing arts at the heart of the Princeton experience. This mission is based on the conviction that exposure to the arts helps each of us to make sense of our lives and the lives of our neighbors. We pursue this mission by bringing together a vibrantly diverse community of people with different backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, skills and talents. We will be accepting applications in Creative Writing, Dance, Music, Theater, and Visual Arts. Applicants should be early career composers, conductors, musicians, choreographers, visual artists, film makers, poets, novelists, playwrights, designers, directors and performance artists -- this list is not meant to be exhaustive -- who would find it beneficial to spend two years working in an artistically vibrant university community. Fellowships are for two academic years. An $86,000 salary for each year is included. Fellows will be in residence for academic years 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 at Princeton as part of the Lewis Center for the Arts and the Department of Music. The normal work assignment will be to teach one course each semester subject to approval by the Dean of the Faculty. Applicants are not required to have prior teaching experience and although the teaching load is light, our expectation is that Fellows will be full and active members of our community. As part of their submitted application materials, we encourage all applicants to describe their experiences with encouraging diversity and inclusion in their artistic practice, teaching and/or research in the past and present, and their ability to make future contributions. Any submitted statement should include their potential for supporting the Lewis Center's commitment to diversity and to furthering equitable practices within the arts as well as their potential to mentor and educate students from backgrounds underrepresented in the candidate's artistic field. Princeton Arts Fellows may not hold concurrent teaching positions at other institutions for the duration of the fellowship. Interviews of finalists are expected to take place on campus the week of December 14-15, 2021. All finalists are expected to attend the on-campus interview. While Fellows need not reside in Princeton, they will be required to spend a significant part of the week on campus. This Fellowship cannot be used to fund work leading to a Ph.D. or any other advanced degree. Holders of Ph.D. degrees from Princeton are not eligible to apply. Please apply online by September 14, 2021, 5:00 p.m. EST. To apply, please submit a curriculum vitae, a statement about how you would hope to use the two years of the fellowship at this moment in your career, contact information for three references (should the search committee choose to contact references, please do not request letters or have letters sent in advance of a request from the search committee), and work samples (i.e., a writing sample, images of your work, video links to performances, etc.). You are also encouraged to submit an optional diversity and inclusion statement as part of your application package. Applicants can only apply for the Princeton Arts Fellowship twice in a lifetime. Statements are limited to 500 words and writing samples to 3,000 words. Selection will be based on artistic promise and record of achievement; the potential for meaningful engagement with a diverse pool of undergraduate students; and the likelihood of significant contributions to the intellectual and artistic life of the Princeton community.
