JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Women’s Basketball coach in creating and maintaining a successful program for the institution on the field, in the classroom and in the community.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Teach skills required for both team and individual player development at the direction of and in coordination with the Head
  • Assist with on-field coaching.
  • Provides Instruction and supervision of strength and fitness conditioning of individuals and team.
  • Maintains regular office hours in and out of season.
  • Assist the Head Coach in identifying and recruiting academically and athletically talented student-athletes.
    • Communicates with coaches and players.
    • Actively involved in every aspect of the recruiting process.
    • Identifies prospects, makes initial communication, and is point of contact for specific prospects.
    • Works with specific prospects through the entire intake/admissions/eligibility process.
  • Assist operational aspects of team management, including but not limited to: equipment inventory and field preparation and maintenance.
  • Assist Head Coach in ensuring a positive student-athlete experience.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with students, colleagues, staff, alumni, and parents to ensure the success and growth of the program.
  • Supports the Head Coach in all areas of team development and management.
  • Serves as a manager in the Cochran Wellness Center for hours to be specified by Director of Athletics.
  • Identifies as a Campus Security Authority (CSA)
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Head Men’s Soccer coach and/or the Director of Athletics.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Skill in the coaching and training of student athletes.
  • Knowledge of college-level athletic program management principles.
  • Knowledge of sports field maintenance principles.
  • Knowledge of Women’s Basketball rules and procedures.
  • Knowledge of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC), and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Head Women’s Basketball coach assigns work in terms of program goals and objectives. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include University System of Georgia (USG), Middle Georgia State University (MGA), SSAC and NAIA rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:

  • The work consists of varied program management and coaching duties. The variety of tasks to be overseen contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to help direct and coach the University’s Women’s Basketball program. Success in this position results in the successful provision of programming to Middle Georgia State University students.

CONTACTS:

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other University personnel, students, and coaches from other institutions, Referees, student athletes, business professionals, professional scouts, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, or to motivate or influence persons.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching, and occasionally sitting at a desk or table. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
  • The work is typically performed in an office, in sports facilities, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts.
  • Night and weekend work is required.
  • Travel is required.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has no direct supervision over other positions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a Bachelor degree in a course of study related to the occupational field; OR,
  • Experience as a player or coach at the collegiate or professional level as a substitute for education requirements.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service.

COMPENSATION CLASSIFICATION:

  • Position is an exempt, salaried position.
  • Salary grade is unassigned.
