JOB SUMMARY: This position assists in numerous and varied aspects of the University’s public relations and communications missions. The intern will have opportunities to handle creative, clerical and managerial aspects of different marketing and communications projects. Through working on these various projects, the intern will have ample opportunities to directly apply principles learned in the classroom.

MAJOR DUTIES: Assist with the public relations and internal communications and public relations missions of the Communications staff. This assistance may include, but is not limited to:Creation of visual and written content for social, digital, and traditional media:

  • Reviewing publications
  • Maintaining the Office’s press clippings
  • Monitoring social, digital, and traditional media
  • Provide perspectives on student use of media channels
  • Perform photography/videography services at campus events and activities
  • Proofreads and edits content, including print documents, digital content, advertising materials and social media.
  • Work with Communications staff to identify and leverage social media trends
  • Performs other tasks as assigned

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: As this is an internship opening for an undergraduate college student, we understand that few candidates will have all or even most of these desirable qualifications.

  • Working knowledge of Chicago or AP style
  • Experience writing for or working with media representatives
  • Skill in photography, videography, and/or audio recording

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Director of Communications assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot checks work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include University and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK: The work consists of varied tasks, assigned by different staff members. The ability to multitask and prioritize a number of job items is important to the success in this position.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, faculty, staff, students, applicants, vendors and members of the general public.
    Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to provide services or to follow up on project
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table.
  • The work is typically performed in an office.
  • The work occasionally requires carrying photography/videography equipment to shooting locations and occasional travel to other MGA campuses and off-site locations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Undergraduate college student, working towards a bachelor’s degree in New Media and Communications, Marketing or another closely-related field
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Superior interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Excellent writing, grammar, and editing skills
  • Experience with social media platforms, especially Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube
  • Detail-oriented, organized and enthusiastic
  • Able to work 19 regular hours/week, during normal campus business hours
  • Must be a current enrolled MGA student.
  • Must be enrolled in 6 or more semester hours per semester.
  • Must have a GPA of 2.0 or greater.
