Yakima Valley College seeks an innovative Information Technology Instructor who is active and accomplished in their discipline, who has a record of successful teaching or related experience, and who is committed to community college students and their success. This is a full-time, special faculty (non-tenure track) position, with an anticipated start of September 2021.
Reporting to the Dean of Workforce Education, the Information Technology Instructor will demonstrate they have actively experimented or are professionally interested in interventions and strategies designed to close the achievement gaps for underrepresented students. Additionally, we are seeking a candidate with a record as a successful instructor who demonstrates the strong promise of becoming a contributing member of the Workforce Education Division.
The applicant must be able to develop equity-minded practices within an educational environment.
- Teach a variety of Information Technology courses including areas, such as network administration, security, programming, and development in a variety of modalities including lecture and lab settings
- Lead efforts to increase student success in Information Technology, including closing achievement gaps between demographic groups
- Build relationships in Information Technology settings that result in high-quality partnerships and co-op/internship placements
- Support and prepare students for employment, build a foundation for transfer to a four-year institution and increase knowledge and skills for those currently employed
- Willingness to teach alternate hours
- Engage in assessment activities to meet the requirements of the College, program, and course-level student evaluation
- Use a variety of teaching methodologies, including technology tools effectively
- Develop/revise departmental curriculum based on changes and updates at state and national levels
- Assist with coordination of departmental programs including awarded grants, State or Federal funding, and/or special projects
- Continually upgrade knowledge and skills in order to maintain relevant curriculum
- Work effectively with supervisors, colleagues, staff, and students as part of an education team
- Instructors are expected to keep up with the pace of rapidly changing technology and teaching methods in the community college system
- Place primary emphasis on student learning in the design, delivery, and evaluation of courses
- Teach to a variety of learning styles as demonstrated in the development of course materials and assessments of student learning
- Participate in student advising, Guided Pathways advising model, campus committee work, course and curriculum planning, department meetings, and other assigned duties.
- QUALIFICATIONS: KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Information Technology subject matter in network administration, security, programming, and development
- Adult teaching and learning models and practices
- Responsive customer service for a culturally diverse population
- Handle confidential information with tact, discretion, and in compliance with FERPA compliance
- Communicate knowledge and skills in both oral and written form with students who represent a broad spectrum of ages, abilities, ethnicity, education, and cultural backgrounds
- Successfully collaborate with peers
- Use a variety of technology including Microsoft Office, Video platforms, learning management systems, adobe, etc.
- Adopt teaching methods/styles that support successful learning appropriate to the student population
- Occasionally travel to various offsite advisory board meetings or other locations as required
- An earned Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Software Development, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or related field from a regionally accredited institution
- (2) years of IT industry experience in areas such as network administration, security, programming, development, and/or relevant, current teaching experience in an IT specialization
- Demonstrated ability to implement curriculum and deliver instruction in multiple modes of instruction (online, hybrid, and face-to-face)
- Eligibility for professional technical certification in the State of Washington
- Earned Master's degree or Doctorate in Information Technology, Software Development, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or related field from a regionally accredited institution
- (4) years of IT industry experience in areas such as network administration, security, programming, and development
- Experience in student advising and/or career counseling
- Teaching experience at the university or community/technical college level
- Related industry certifications (e.g. CompTIA, Cisco, Microsoft )
