Job Description Summary

Performs experiments examining plant development, physiology, genetics, and biochemistry, with a focus on
pollen and plant reproduction. Generates and analyzes transcriptomic data and microscopic images to monitor
changes in signaling molecules and metabolite accumulation. Measures accumulation of secondary metabolites by
liquid chromatography mass spectroscopy and generates genetic constructs for plant transformation.

Essential Functions:

Major Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Performs and designs research experiments
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of research
  • Prepares reagents for research
  • Grows and maintains plant material for research
  • Performs microscopic imaging
  • Performs transcriptomic analyses
  • Publishes papers

Other Essential Functions

  • Presents research in oral and poster presentations at conferences
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry or Biological Sciences or related field
  • Knowledge of the principles of genetics and genomics
  • Knowledge of hormone signal transduction and metabolic pathways
  • Skills in the safe and accurate use of biological reagents
  • Ability to communicate (oral and written)
  • Ability to work in a group as part of team
  • Proficiency in the use of computers including spreadsheet and image analysis programs
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in experimental systems using the above knowledge and skills.
  • Isolation of RNA and quantification of gene expression including large transcriptomic datasets
  • Biochemical analysis of metabolite accumulation
  • Experience with molecular cloning and plant transformation

Accountabilities:

  • Provides training and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate research students
  • Procures research supplies and reagents
