Job Description Summary

The VUB Assistant Director of Counseling, Curriculum, and Assessment is responsible with the VUB Director for the identification, assessment, monitoring, and evaluation of approximately 160 low income, first-generation veterans annually who are interested in pursuing postsecondatry education. The Assistant Director of Counseling, Curriculum & Assessment will also be responsible for developing, organizing, and conducting activities and support services that will encourage and enable participants to adequately prepare for post secondary admission and eventual graduation from a four-year baccalaureate program. In addition, the Assistant Director of Counseling, Curriculum & Assessment is responsible for the planning, coordination, referral, and implementation of various counseling services and activities to diagnose, document and remedy students' academic, personal and interpersonal challenges.

CONTINGENT ON GRANT POSITION FUNDED THROUGH AUGUST 31, 2022

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Meet with 2/3 of participants to plan and implement their Individual Academic Plan to include short and long term academic and career goals and assess each of their academic and personal strengths and challenges (to include employment, housing, health ( mental, physical and substance abuse issues), family, fear of failing, fear of succeeding, self-esteem and other issues). Meet with students a minimum of one time a month.

2. Assist students in career assessments, choosing post-secondary institutions, completing admission applications, applying for financial aid and completing scholarship searches.

3. Strategize with students on how to eliminate issues that may impede their academic performance. Make referrals to appropriate university offices and community agencies to support them with these efforts.

4. Maintain continuous contact with educational/community/veteran-related agencies and administrators for the purpose of recruitment. Encourage enrollment into the program through non-traditional mechanisms including media, church and other community presentations. Schedule and conduct recruitment presentations. Complete recruitment reports as required.

5. Facilitate workshops or seminars with topics that will assist students in their pursuits for higher education.

6. Review and update records and credentials of all current students ( i.e. acceptance letters to colleges) in both hard and electronic files. Ensure that data entry into the database for the U.S. Department of Education is accurate and complete.

7. Go into the six-county Greater Philadelphia Region to meet with veteran related contacts; attend veteran fairs and other veteran connected events to recruit veterans for the VUB program.

8. Accompany Veterans Upward Bound participants to and from program related activites.

9. Prepare, edit and publish a program newsletter once a cycle.

10. Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

-A minimum of two years of experience working with pre-college participants. At least two years of experience designing, implementing, or overseeing

pre-college advising, outreach, or student support programs. A minimum of two years of experience working with participants from diverse backgrounds(i.e., first-generation, low-income, TRIO, or Gear Up). Experience working with public school personnel and community agency staff who serve participants.

- Experience working with low-income, first-generation participants.

-Experience with instructional design and virtual learning environment preferred.

-Strong organizational, programming, motivational, and leadership skills.

-Strong interpersonal, written, presentation and technology skills.

-Must be knowledgeable about the college preparatory process.

-Must be self-initiating, resourceful, and highly motivated.

-Ability to manage competing priorites successfully.

-Ability to advise, mentor, and coach participants successfully.

-Ability to desgin and implement successful educational programming.

-Must be student-centered and service oriented.

-Demonstrated commitment to diversity.
