Description:

The Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (SPHTM) invites applications for the position of Deputy Director, Tulane Health Equity Research Learning Collaborative and Research Professor. This is a 3-year term faculty appointment with the possibility for renewal.

The HER-LC will be comprised of public and private research funders, public health practitioners, academic researchers, community-based researchers, and organizations. As the organizing home for the collaborative, Tulane is responsible for coordinating and supporting the work of the HER-LC to stimulate the evolution of health equity research from descriptive research to actionable and equitable solutions-oriented research. The HER-LC seeks to foster inter-disciplinary health equity research by harnessing the extensive experience of its network members and drawing upon diverse disciplinary and practice-based perspectives across multiple sectors.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of the HER-LC will have dual responsibilities: advancing the HER-LC activities and leading the development of various events and outputs. This entails:

1) Working with senior leadership across our Administrative, Research, Convenings, and Communications Teams and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to shape a vision for the collaborative’s work and thought leadership and depth on crosscutting health equity issues to develop the HER-LC frameworks and approaches.

2) Recruiting new members and organizations to the network and establishing community action coalitions, which can be geography-based or based on topical areas, as well as a research collaborative that matches communities or systems with researchers and funding opportunities. The Director will optimize relationships by proactively building and cultivating trust and strengthening stakeholder relationships through ongoing engagement with key decision makers, collaborators, current and potential funders, consultants, partners, and stakeholders to promote HER-LC’s work and our outcomes-driven commitments.

3) Organizing consensus workshops and managing entries from solicitation of commissioned papers.

4) Managing the distribution of challenge and demonstration grants to partners, as well as development and management of the collaborative’s grant-making compendium and case studies that best illustrate the ways grantmaking organizations prioritize and develop processes for health equity funding and advocacy work.

5) Supervising the data collection and evaluation efforts aimed at understanding the state of the science on HE research methods and methodologies and funder priorities. This includes management of any relevant IRB applications or packages.

6) Leading the development and implementation of dissemination efforts, including our webinar series and podcast, as well as newsletter and other dissemination mechanisms.

7) Managing the collaborative annual review process, including tracking and reporting on organizational priorities, key performance indicators, and strategic planning anticipated outcomes.

8) Supporting hiring of permanent staff (e.g., Communications Specialist, Research Coordinator) and supervising their work.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Doctoral degree (DrPH, PhD, EdD, etc.) in public health, policy, communications or related field. Three or more years of extensive experience plus proven leadership and management, particularly across organizations or sectors. Experience with and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion frameworks and health equity research. Extensive experience in the design, implementation, and reporting of organization initiatives of varying sizes from project planning and management, personnel management, and fiscal and budget components. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (written and verbal), including ability to listen to and communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders from diverse backgrounds in relatable and meaningful ways. Ability to present issues in compelling terms and to communicate complex data and concepts clearly and effectively. Skill with facilitating learning, planning, and knowledge transfer in a variety of formats (i.e., face-to-face, virtual, hybrid). Excellent project management, time management, and organizational skills with careful attention to detail, and a demonstrated ability to manage multi-faceted projects and perform well in a fast-paced environment. Significant experience successfully managing teams and building capacity through mentorship and professional development. Ability to problem solve, and nimbleness in adapting to changing circumstances as well as being an out-of-the-box, innovative thinker and not afraid to challenge the status-quo.
