The Biomedical Engineering Department seeks a Director of Biomedical Engineering (BME) Laboratories to join their team. This lab director plays a key role in conjunction with faculty in shaping the learning environment within the department. They will provide support for all laboratory activities, facilities, and equipment in the Biomedical Engineering Department and will be responsible for supporting and integrating up-to-date, biomedical engineering related laboratory equipment and techniques in the department’s degree program. This position will report directly to the chair of the department and collaborate in managing technical budgets for the department.

Should the need arise, and depending upon the qualifications and interest of the lab director, opportunities for teaching exist. While the lab director will be primarily responsible for supporting the learning environment of the Biomedical Engineering Department, they will also engage with the College of Engineering staff to provide relevant technical support throughout the College.


Job Duties:
Learning Environment Support.
Manage and improve the laboratory learning environments in the BME Department. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining facilities, equipment, software, and instrumentation, and training students and faculty in their use; keeping operating procedures and laboratory policies up-to-date; managing a facilities budget and maintaining laboratory supplies; ensuring accessibility to these environments; and recommending and coordinating laboratory maintenance, updates, and renovations, including assisting with capital budget requests.

Instructional Support.
Provide technical support for instruction in the Biomedical Engineering laboratories under the direction of the responsible faculty member. This support would cover a range of engineering and science activities related to biomedical engineering including, but not limited to, bench-top engineering labs, instrumentation, data acquisition, design, fabrication, cell culturing, and biological specimen handling.

Facilities Support.
Work with faculty to develop, implement, and maintain facilities, equipment, software, and procedures needed for the department's teaching and scholarship in a way that is accessible to students and faculty.

Project Management.
Coordinate and manage resource access for student projects, including managing project budgets.

Training Responsibilities.
Develop and maintain training procedures for laboratory equipment, tools, and other department resources including activities such as offering short courses, certifications, or practical examinations that support student access to department resources. Provide instruction for non-BME students and faculty with regard to laboratory capabilities in BME-managed spaces.

Supervision Responsibilities.
Supervise student employees of the BME Department working on tasks related to the support of the laboratory environment. Assign tasks, provide instruction and guidance, and assess the quality of the students’ work and provide feedback.

Professional Expertise and Networking.
Follow current trends in biomedical engineering in areas related to the BME curriculum. Engage in appropriate professional development activities to support these trends, and advocate for change within the department when current technologies and methods become outdated. Develop and maintain cross-disciplinary professional networks that advance the objectives of the program to encourage and support cross-disciplinary interactions among faculty, students, and staff. Attend conferences, workshops, and similar events relevant to the objectives of the BME Department.

Research and Design Support.
Support laboratory activities in senior design, independent student and faculty research, and undergraduate and graduate research projects.

Safety.
The Director of Biomedical Engineering Laboratories will be responsible for working with faculty to establish safety policies, monitoring laboratory safety, as well as maintaining and communicating appropriate laboratory safety procedures. Coordinate with Environmental Health and Safety to ensure compliance with current safety standards in BME facilities.

Teaching Responsibilities (For individuals with at least a master’s degree)
Assume teaching responsibilities in their area of expertise, particularly undergraduate laboratories and courses in the areas that overlap with the position such as fabrication, instrumentation, cell culturing, testing and measurement, specific software tools, etc. Teaching responsibilities shall be determined as needed, in consultation with the department chair on a yearly basis, but will typically not exceed two course equivalents (2.0 units) per year.

Liaison.
Serve as a liaison with other members of the College of Engineering staff to represent BME Department interests and support technical activities across the College.

Outreach.
Interact with external partners and collaborators with regard to faculty and student research and design projects. Support experiential learning efforts with external partners.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. A bachelor's degree in engineering or science.
2. Experimental engineering laboratory experience, preferably in an educational setting.
3. Ability to manage facilities and budgets.
4. Ability to provide instructional support in technical areas related to the BME learning environment.
5. A willingness to develop skills associated with the wide range of technical areas associated with biomedical engineering.
6. A progressive record of training, education, and experience relevant to the duties and responsibilities of the position.
7. Proficiency with standard office productivity software.
8. Ability and willingness to interact and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
9. Strong organizational and prioritization skills.


Preferred Qualifications:
1. For applicants interested in teaching responsibilities, the following are required:
a. At least a master’s degree in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a related field.
b. At least two years of instructional lab experience, preferably in a higher education setting.
2. Experience with computer-aided design software and fabrication techniques and equipment.
3. Experience with test and measurement instrumentation.
4. Experience with a wide range of engineering software.
5. Experience with cell culture.
