The Ethnic Studies program at De Anza College is known as Intercultural Studies, part of the Intercultural/International Studies (IIS) Division. This Ethnic Studies program includes African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicanx/Latinx Studies, Native American and Indigenous Studies (includes Pacific Islander Studies), Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Comparative Ethnic Studies courses. The IIS Division includes Intercultural Studies, International Studies, and World Languages.  International Studies includes courses in Non-Western Art History.    

Position 1.  Primary responsibility of the Chicanx/Latinx Studies Instructor position is to teach a variety of college-level courses that fulfill either general education requirements or an Associate of Arts degree in Intercultural Studies. Provide classroom instruction in Chicanx/Latinx Studies courses using student-learning-and-success-centered pedagogies.  Primary teaching assignments may include: introduction to Chicanx/Latinx studies, history, art history, culture, identity, contemporary communities, transnationalism, diaspora, race and racism, and literature. Secondary course assignments may include: comparative ethnic studies; research theories and methods; women, gender, and sexuality studies; intercultural communication, multicultural art history; and other Intercultural/International Studies Division courses. 

Position 2.  Primary responsibility of the Comparative Ethnic Studies Instructor position is to teach a variety of college-level courses that fulfill either general education requirements or an Associate of Arts degree in Intercultural Studies. Provide classroom instruction in Comparative Ethnic Studies courses using student-learning-and-success-centered pedagogies. Primary teaching assignments may include: comparative history in ethnic studies; comparative contemporary communities in ethnic studies; comparative racial formations; research theories and methods. 
Secondary course assignments may include: indigenous studies, Pacific Islander studies, intercultural communication, multicultural art history; women, gender, and sexuality studies; and other Intercultural/International Studies Division courses. 

Both Positions.  Instructors will foster an inclusive, respectful and active community of learners that critically explores and investigates a problem-posing analysis of the above topic areas.  Instructors engage in emancipatory pedagogies that make connections between the classroom, our Campus, and society at large. Instruction will address globalization, migration, economic, gender, and other forms of systemic oppression, exploring both historically successful and emergent strategies for addressing these challenges in transformative ways.  

Standard duties expected of the two positions include: coordination of departmental course offerings/scheduling, cultivating collegiality among department faculty, development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, collaborative participation in department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities (particularly those focused on supporting student learning and success), and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor and member of a college community.  Instructors participate in campus extracurricular student support and success activities, and serve on college-wide and District committees. 


  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff. 
  2. Chicanx/Latinx Studies Instructor:  Master’s in Chicanx/Latinx Studies OR the equivalent, OR Master’s in related field AND upper division or graduate course work in Chicanx/Latinx Studies OR the EQUIVALENT
  3. Comparative Ethnic Studies Instructor: Master’s in Comparative Ethnic Studies OR the equivalent, OR in Native American and Indigenous, African American, Asian American, Chicanx/Latinx, AND upper division or graduate course work in comparative ethnic studies OR the EQUIVALENT,   OR Master’s in related field AND upper division or graduate course work in comparative ethnic studies OR the EQUIVALENT


  1. Ph.D. in one of the areas of instruction listed above. 
  2. Experience working effectively, collaboratively and across disciplines with students, faculty, and staff from diverse linguistic, academic, socio-economic, ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds; with diverse physical and learning abilities; and with diverse sexual orientations, by modeling attitudes and behaviors that foster a climate of respect, inclusion, and collaboration. 
  3. Experience effectively using creative, interactive, and engaging teaching strategies, including multimedia and cooperative group structures, to engage the multiple learning modalities of diverse student populations, which results in student learning and success. 
  4. A commitment to, and successful experience with grassroot-community and college-community advocacy/organizing, especially through student engaged learning (community-service-learning and civic-engagement experiences). 
  5. Significant experience in multicultural, multiracial/multiethnic, and intercultural teaching, research (especially action research), and community engagement, and, in intercultural alliance building. 
  6. A commitment to, and successful experience with working collaboratively as a member of a team to advance the social justice and multicultural missions of the Division and of the College. 
  7. A commitment to, and successful experience with effectively engaging students from historically marginalized communities by scaffolding writing, reading, and critical analysis skills.
