Departmental Overview

The University of California Botanical Garden. (UCBG) features one of the most diverse plant collections in the United States. Established in 1890, the Garden's 34 acres contain over 13,238 taxas and more than 20,231 accessions from all over the world arranged by region. The Garden is famous for its large number of rare and endangered species. The Mission Statement for the UCBG is "to develop and maintain a diverse living collection of plants to support teaching and worldwide research in plant biology, further the conservation of plant diversity, and promote public understanding and appreciation of plants and the natural environment."

Responsibilities

The UC Botanical Garden attracts many visitors from the local communities as well as from abroad. Visitor services presents the face of the Garden by providing the first contact visitors have with it and, as such, it is a very important role. This position opens and closes the Garden in the morning, financially and physically. This position oversees and supports work-study students and volunteers working in both the Kiosk and Shop each day and is on call to assist them in their roles, troubleshoot issues with guests or facilities, and handles emergencies in the Garden as they arise. If a student or volunteer is unable to work the shift, this position works to find alternate coverage or steps into work the Kiosk or Shop themselves. Aside from greeting visitors and recommending parts of the Garden to visit, whether seasonally or by the visitor's interest, this position also requires strong customer service skills answering a myriad of questions both in person and on the phone. This position also provides support for the Garden administration and assists with rentals, retail, programs and publicity. UC requires a background check for this position. POS and cash handling experience suggested.

Visitor Services:
  • Greet all visitors to the Garden and provide information about visiting the Garden.
  • 2-3 days a week oversee day to day operations as Visitor Experience Manager on Duty, which includes overseeing and supporting Work-Study Students and Volunteers working in the Kiosk and Shop daily
  • When Students or Volunteers are not available to work in the Kiosk or Shop or when they need lunch/break coverage, step in to cover and receive admission fees from Garden visitors, shop sales, as well as membership sales.
  • Prepare daily reconciliation of cash register, check, and charge transactions.
  • Answer the primary phone line and main Garden email address providing information about the Garden, its programs, and services and forwarding emails to appropriate staff.
  • Direct in-person, telephone and email inquiries to appropriate resources as needed.
  • Coordinate emergency situations, such as separated children, injuries and accidents. Work with staff on site to respond to emergencies.
  • When guest accidents happen, report to Campus Risk Services.
  • Troubleshoot parking and other visitor facility problems.
  • Promote membership sales whenever appropriate.
  • Being in the front of the Garden and the first to become aware, alert staff of issues on Centennial Drive, in the parking lot and in the Garden.
  • Contact campus police when deemed necessary. -
  • Assist Visitor Experience team with work-study training and effectively communicate pertinent Garden information to Visitor Experience Work-Study Students.
  • Assist Visitor Experience team with other tasks and projects to ensure positive visitor experiences and efficient front-end Garden operation.

Administrative Support:
  • Assist Visitor Experience team and wider Garden with special administrative and clerical tasks and projects as needed to ensure efficient Garden operation.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience working with the public.
  • Demonstrated strong written, verbal communications skills with excellent interpersonal and customer service skills to be able to interact with diverse group of people.
  • Demonstrated experience handling cash, working with cash registers and charge machines, and financial reconciliation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize work, work under pressure, with multiple interruptions.
  • Must be highly detailed-oriented and self-motivated.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in decision making and to remain calm under emergency/crisis situations.
  • Work well independently and as a team member.
  • Advanced computer skills (email, MS Office, Google products, PC & MAC; adaptable to new programs as needed or mandated by UCB campus IT).

Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent education/experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with volunteers and college students.

Salary & Benefits

Salary commensurate with experience. This appointment is not eligible for UC Benefits Plan.

  • 40% FTE (16 hours per week)
  • Limited appointment with approximate duration of 1 year
  • This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Clerical & Allied Services Unit (CX) between the University of California and Teamsters Local 2010.
