Summary

The Women’s Prison Project is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between Tulane’s Domestic Violence and Criminal Justice clinic. The program provides legal representation to criminalized survivors of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and trafficking, with a particular focus on survivors charged or imprisoned after killing an abuser in self-defense or for having committed crimes under an abuser’s coercion or duress. Clinic students get hands-on legal training and the women receive representation on their legal cases.
The Access to Justice Fellow at Tulane will spend 18 months dedicated to expanding access to justice to imprisoned women, by creating and leading a training program for incarcerated women who assist other unrepresented incarcerated women in filing their legal cases. The fellow will be responsible for project design, drafting a legal “how to” manual, creating training modules, and building a social science resource bank. The project will be designed for replication in other states and jurisdictions, and the fellow will partner with the American Bar Association’s Commission on Domestic & Sexual Violence to create a webinar and presentations at two national conferences to encourage the Project’s wider application.
