Bard Early College NetworkAdjunct Professor of the Humanities /Social Sciences, Bard Sequence Program (Washington, D.C.)Employer Website: https://apply.interfolio.com/89489
The Bard Early Colleges (BEC) are founded on the belief that many high school–age students are eager and ready for the intellectual challenges of a college education. The Bard Early Colleges act on this belief by providing younger scholars with a tuition-free, credit-bearing college course of study in the liberal arts following the 9th and 10th grades. Students are taught by college faculty in seminar classes and earn college credits up to an associate in arts (A.A.) degree from Bard College, concurrently with a high school diploma. Now in its second decade, the Bard Early College network serves over 2910 students in campuses in New York City, New York; Newark, New Jersey; New Orleans, Louisiana; Cleveland, Ohio; Baltimore, Maryland; and Washington, DC.

Bard invites applications for a dynamic individual who seeks to join a new initiative of the Bard Early Colleges – the Bard Sequence – which will enter its third year in 2021-2022. Through partnerships between Bard College and public high schools and school systems, the Bard Sequence allows students in the 11th and 12th grades to take Bard College’s signature interdisciplinary humanities Seminar Sequence and other college-level electives on site at their schools, taught by an adjunct professor selected and trained by Bard. The Bard Sequence offers students earlier exposure to college study and the opportunity to earn 12 Bard College credits over four semesters.

The Bard Sequence currently runs in-person programs in Washington, D.C., Orange, NJ and Brooklyn and the Bronx, NY; this position is in-person and on-site in D.C.

Position Description:
The Bard Sequence is seeking an adjunct professor to teach Bard College’s signature Seminar course, which is an interdisciplinary course in the humanities that combines challenging, diverse, multicultural texts from the past and present, to students at a partner high school in Washington, D.C., beginning in Fall 2021.

There are opportunities to teach one section or multiple sections of the course per semester, depending on professor availability. The professor will have access to curricular resources, professional development, and a community of faculty teaching the course.

Key responsibilities:
Bard Sequence faculty members are required to participate in pre-course training and ongoing professional development to aid in the teaching of the dual enrollment courses. This professional development is overseen by the Director of the Bard Sequence and the Bard Early Colleges, Bard College’s early college division. Bard Sequence faculty members report to the Director of the Bard Sequence and Bard College's Vice President and Dean of the Early Colleges. Position Requirements:
The successful applicant for this position will have a passion for college access and expanding dual enrollment opportunities and be excited to teach college classes to a diverse group of high school-age students in Washington, D.C.

A terminal degree in a humanities or social sciences field is required (candidates who are ABD will be considered)

Candidates with high school and college teaching experience are preferred. Above all, the successful candidate will have experience with and investment in working with first generation college students or those otherwise at risk of not completing college. The candidate must be flexible and adaptable in working through the challenges associated with scaffolding a rigorous program for these students.
Expected Start Date:
Start date is mid-August 2021, to allow for participation in Sequence pre-semester professional development workshops.

Location:
On-site teaching in Washington, DC

To Apply:
Please upload a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, one-page teaching statement, sample course syllabus, and the names and contact information for three references through the Interfolio job application link provided here: http://apply.interfolio.com/89489

Graduate Degrees

More than 200 students are seeking graduate degrees: M.A. in curatorial studies, M.Music in vocal arts, conducting, and curatorial, critical, and performance studies, and M.S. in environmental policy, climate science and policy, and economic theory and policy at the Annandale campus; M.F.A. and M.A.T. at multiple campuses; M.B.A. in Sustainability in New York City; and M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in the decorative arts, design history, and material culture at the Bard Graduate Center in Manhattan. Cultural Life

Campus life in Annandale is vibrant, with world-class performing arts venues; continuous and varied student activities; and numerous cultural and recreational opportunities in the surrounding historic Hudson River Valley and in New York City. Students choose from more than a hundred active clubs on campus, and new clubs begin every semester. The Bard College athletic teams are the Raptors. The College’s colors are red and white. The critically acclaimed Bard Music Festival is presented on campus each summer, exploring the life and work of a single composer through chamber music, choral and orchestral performances, symposia, panel discussions, and preconcert talks. Since 2003 the festival has been part of Bard SummerScape, which annually presents operas, films, and theatrical productions that complement the festival’s theme.

Outstanding Faculty

Bard's undergraduate faculty-to-student ratio is 1:10 and courses are taught by full faculty members. Among the many distinguished faculty at Bard College are five MacArthur Fellows—poets John Ashbery and Ann Lauterbach, novelist and memoirist Norman Manea, painter and multimedia artist Judy Pfaff, and journalist Mark Danner. Other notable faculty members include soprano Dawn Upshaw, journalist Ian Buruma, composers Joan Tower and George Tsontakis, poet Robert Kelly, and writers Luc Sante and Francine Prose. Over the years, four recipients of the Nobel Prize in Literature have taught at Bard—Saul Bellow, Isaac Bashevis Singer, José Saramago, and Orhan Pamuk.
