Departmental Overview

The Brar and Ünal labs require support to ensure research programs function smoothly. This is a team lab that works on budding yeast and we require clean glassware for our experiments, as well as preparation of yeast media and materials for working with yeast, including velvets and toothpicks.

This is a part-time (20 hours per week), career position eligible for full UC Benefits.

Responsibilities

Glassware Washing
  • Wash glass- and plastic-ware by hand or by machine.
  • Prepare glassware for sterilization and sterilize using autoclave.
  • Wash glass pipets.
  • Restock shelves, drawers and cupboards with clean, dry glassware.
  • Keep sterile glassware and equipment separated from non-sterile stocks. Maintain order and cleanliness of glassware washing areas.
  • Help maintain general laboratory cleanliness.

Prepare yeast handling tools
  • Wash and autoclave velvets
  • Wash and autoclave glass beads
  • Autoclave Toothpicks
  • Autoclave pipet tips
  • Special handling of Meiosis flasks (handwashing and sterilizing in 120C oven)

Autoclave and dispose laboratory waste
  • Laboratory trash collected in non medical waste bags as well as serological pipets must be autoclaved before disposing.

Required Qualifications
  • Previous experience washing and handling laboratory glassware
  • Previous experience preparing media and materials for yeast work
  • Previous experience using laboratory dishwashing and sterilization equipment
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to move 30-lb containers
  • Experience using laboratory chemicals
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety techniques and procedures, as well as chemical disposal guidelines
  • Ability to adhere to EH&S Safety Policies and Procedures
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff, including individuals from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds
  • Demonstrated customer service orientation and excellent customer service skills
  • Academic preparation and/or at least one year of equivalent experience working in a laboratory setting.

Salary & Benefits

This is an hourly (biweekly paid) role. Hourly rate will be commensurate with experience (stepped rates).
