Job Summary:

Reporting to the Director, Sport and Youth Programs, the Assistant Director's primary focus is to plan and manage the operations of an inclusive tiered competitive Club Sports program. Specific responsibilities include student leadership development, supervision and training of part-time administrative and coaching staff, participant registration and program compliance management, scheduling, implementation of risk and safety standards, oversight of club sport special events, budget and administrative management.

As Assistant Director of Sport Programs, you are somebody who loves sports, a great teacher, reliable, a champion of student leadership, and balance fun and creativity with day-to-day executional skills. Being a great teammate, you'll work closely with units and work teams within the Department of Athletics, PE, and Recreation (DAPER). As part of DAPER, sport programs at Recreation and Wellness starts with the student in mind and helps their wellbeing through engaging in fair, inclusive, and exceptional sports opportunities.

In this role you will:

Program Management and Operations (50%)
  • Manage Club Sports athlete and team registration including the collection of forms and information including: team travel, fundraising, compliance, assumption of risk/waivers, accident reports, insurance and risk management, athlete eligibility, post-season competition, development efforts, alumni relations, coach employment, team supervision and any other required documents.
  • Oversight of club team tournaments and special event planning.
  • Ensure the indoor and outdoor facilities for all competitive sports teams are reserved and coordinated.
  • Support Club Sport policies and procedures based on university, department and governing body directives and guidelines.
  • Develop an annual club sport calendar that includes practices, competitions/tournaments and special events.
  • Contribute to the development of marketing materials and strategies to enhance storytelling of participant experience/achievements.
  • Based on Sport Program assessed outcomes, implement programming changes to enhance the effectiveness of the Club Sport Program.
  • Collaborate with other program units and departments for shared initiatives.


Staff Management and Student Leadership Development (25%)
  • Select, train, supervise and evaluate staff including administrative program assistants, supervisors, and support staff.
  • Ensure training and accountability for team captains, club officers and participants for improved program experience.
  • Lead staff meetings, coach training sessions, and other programmatic meetings as needed.
  • Apply leadership theory, mentorship, and belonging and wellbeing principles to staff and student development.


Budget and Administrative Management (15%)
  • Manage club sport participant registration website (DSE) content.
  • Manage equipment inventory for club sports programming.
  • Manage payroll for student and part-time staff.
  • Assist with the maintenance of the Club Sport and Sport Programs website.
  • Collect and provide quarterly and annual program and participant statistics.


Other (10%)
  • Collaborate with others to help resolve program issues and concerns, interpret policies, and mediate complex and sensitive issues.
  • Serve as a resource to other departments; represent Recreation and Wellness at campus events.
  • Other duties as assigned or needed.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in the execution of club sports, and/or sport related special event programming.

  • Passion for trying, learning, improving, and sharing best practices to programs and services.
  • A proven ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience in analysis, decision making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Good teamwork with a strong attention to detail and follow through.
  • NIRSA competencies for programming at the intermediate level.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to independently draft effective correspondence and documentation.
  • Basic computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.


Certifications and Licenses
  • CPR/First Aid/AED Certification of the ability to get within six months of hire
