Plant Growth Facility Technician (50% FTE)

The Department of Biology is seeking a Life Science Technician 2 that will help with the plant growth facility. The ideal candidate will have education and work experience working with plants, basic knowledge of plant culture requirements, anatomy, physiology and have an understanding of the relationship between plant interaction, growing environment, soil and water quality. This position is at 50% FTE.

Characteristic Duties:
  • Primary responsibilities consist of day-to-day greenhouse, growth rooms, growth chambers and field activities related to: irrigation, fertilization, measuring and mixing nutrient solutions, measuring and mixing pesticides and integrated pest management implementation, greenhouse systems and facility monitoring, weeding, cleaning, record-keeping, and perform maintenance tasks on equipment such as: evaporative coolers, temperature controllers, exhaust fans, irrigation controllers, water quality sensors, and bench maintenance.
  • Other responsibilities include: assisting labs with greenhouse/field work, general maintenance of the growth facility, and advising students and researchers on plant care.
  • Immunohistological procedures including frozen sectioning and multi-step immunologic staining for fluorescence or enzymatic detection. Some level of histologic assessment may be required.
  • Maintenance, transfer and establishment of cell lines from normal or tumor cells, preparation and bioassay of serum, screening for contamination, isolation of cell mutants, cell staining, mass production of cells and cell cloning.
  • Fixation, dehydration, staining and embedding of specimens for electron microscopy; carbon coating, negative staining, shadowing, operation of electron microscope (EM) either transmission or scanning; use of an ultramicrotome with adiamond knife for routine thin sectioning; alignment of an EM where the system is automated.
  • Purification and /or structural characterization of compounds for which a protocolis well established.
  • Separation of cells, organelles, or molecules using density gradients.
  • Radioimmunoassay of viruses, proteins, or hormone levels in cell extract according to established protocol
  • Techniques such as electrophoresis, chromatography, autoradiography, radiolabeling of animals, cell cultures, or macromolecules.
  • Isolation, purification and maintenance of mammalian viruses and bacteriophages; determination of viral concentration.
  • Genetic manipulation of bacteria including mutagenesis, ‘phage transduction and transformation.
  • Accurate documentation of experimental protocols and basic statistical analysis of data.

Minimum Education and Experience Required

Two years of laboratory experience or two years of college coursework in the scientific discipline a combination of equivalent education and relevant work experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Work at the Life Science Technician II level requires experience and ability beyond that required for the Life Science Technician I, including increased technical skills and problem-solving abilities.

Desired Qualifications:
  • 2 years of Horticulture, greenhouse, or controlled environment agriculture experience
  • Drivers License
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions and protocols.
  • Able to work independently and enjoy hands-on work.
  • Able to lift 50lbs and work in prolonged positions such as: standing, sitting, bending stooping, stretching, and kneeling.
  • Knowledge in operating basic hand and power tools safely, including landscape and farm equipment.
  • Able to work with and around soil, fertilizers, pesticides, plants, and flowers without a negative allergic reaction.
  • Able to work in a temperature fluctuating environment and a noisy environment as the facility areas are very loud due to fans and greenhouse equipment.
  • Experience with greenhouse controllers such as mechanical controls, Wadsworth, Argus, Priva, Microgrow controllers, and the ability to analyze environmental data.
  • Experience with fertigation and irrigation systems, installation, repairs, and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to obtain a Ca. Qualified Applicator certification (QAC) is a plus.
  • Able to work Tuesday-Saturday or Wednesday-Sunday is a plus.


Physical Requirements

Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand.
  • Ability to stand and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Occasionally lift and handle materials up to 10 pounds
  • Rarely carry/pull and/or push up to 20 pounds
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.


Working Conditions

Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses, or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.
