Position: Director of Communications  |  Full-Time 12-month Department: Institutional Advancement Reports To: Vice President for Institutional Advancement Summary and Expectations:

The Director of Communications is responsible for the creation, implementation and coordination of a comprehensive communications program for Louisburg College.  The qualified candidate will be a key member of the Institutional Advancement team and help shape strategic marketing and communications through creative storytelling and content planning to promote the people, programs, and outcomes of Louisburg College. The Director of Communications will be skilled in writing and editing content that aligns with Louisburg College’s style, tone, and brand guidelines for print and digital communications. 

The Director will work to promote the College to its internal and external communities, increase and maintain the College’s visibility to potential students and donors and develop and promote an understanding of the College’s programs, activities and policies. 

The Director oversees the College’s print and digital publications, advertising, and public relations, develops and implements strategies to grow awareness and positive perceptions of the College and supports efforts to increase fundraising as well as student enrollment and retention. 

The Director will report to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Media Relations 

  • Handling of all media-related inquiries  Actively working with faculty, students, staff, and alumni to generate stories of interest to the local and regional media  Cultivating positive relationships with members of the media  Writing and distributing press releases and advisories 

Print & Digital Publications 

  • Developing and maintaining a communications style guide for Louisburg College. Overseeing the production of Columns, a newsmagazine for alumni and friends annually.  Overseeing the production of View from Main, the college’s monthly newsletter.  Overseeing the production of Leading Louisburg, a monthly newsletter for Louisburg Society Members.  Working with faculty and staff to develop content for college publications.  Working with the Vice President of Institutional Advancement to ensure that all external publications for external audiences are consistent, attractive, and meet institutional standards. 

Website & Digital Media 

  • Developing and overseeing execution of a comprehensive digital media plan for the College on multiple platforms to reach different communities of the College.  Creating and managing website content. Using SEO techniques and CMS to maximize user engagement and traffic. Maintaining news and events databases for current web news.  Working with the Vice President of Institutional Advancement to ensure that website content is accurate, ADA compliant, and up-to-date.

Other

  • Supporting the Vice President for Institutional Advancement in marketing needs related to fundraising.  Supporting the Vice President for Enrollment in the development of recruitment materials. Working directly with Student Life to help develop and assist in crisis communications, Louisburg College alerts, and other student-centered communications.  Working to develop or assist in any special projects that further the mission of the institution as deemed appropriate by the President or Vice President for Institutional Advancement.  Other duties as assigned.  

Qualifications and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications or related field and three years of experience in media relations,  communications planning, and management.  Excellent writing and editing skills.  Knowledge of the principles, practices, and ethics of public relations.  Familiarity with contemporary design aesthetics and best practices, preferably related to print and digital publications.  Ability to work efficiently in a deadline-driven environment and to oversee, prioritize and participate in multiple projects simultaneously.  Creativity, adaptability, diplomatic skills, and a sense of humor. Strong project management skills.  Experience overseeing a communications budget.  Knowledge in brand creation and management.  Proficiency in photo editing, content management, and search engine optimization. Experience in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and email marketing systems (i.e. Constant Contact). Experience managing and maintaining an ADA compliant website, with proficiency in HTML. Ability to lift objects up to 10 pounds and perform job-related duties involving walking, bending,  kneeling, etc.  Availability to occasionally work evenings and weekends, depending on deadline requirements  and special events.
