Nature of Work

The Scientific / Medical Writer in the Center for Health AI at the University of Colorado School of Medicine will play a crucial part in communicating the research happening and planned in the Center with the scientific community. Research at the intersection of AI and health can be complex to communicate. The Scientific / Medical Writer will need to guide Center faculty, staff, and trainees to convey the research and its importance to scientific audiences effectively. The writer will work with center members to design a communication strategy for research and implement the strategy through grant proposals, manuscripts, and other scientific and medical documents. The development process will include assisting faculty with developing grant proposals, crafting and refining specific aims, and responding to critiques from peer review. The writer will provide other specialized support and consultation to prepare research grant proposals within the Center as needed. In some instances, particularly for large program-style applications, the writer will structure and write critical elements to convey the work performed within the Center for Health AI.

Professional Field

This position requires a Ph.D. in a related scientific field due to the high level of scientific knowledge required.

Essential Responsibilities

    Work with investigators within the Center for Health AI to develop, write, and revise basic, translational, and clinical research grant proposals for NIH, foundations, and other appropriate funding agenciesProvide constructive feedback to investigators to improve clarity, logic, and persuasiveness of grant proposalsAdvise investigators on best strategies to convey significance, impact, and innovation of their research planConsult with investigators in responding to critiques for grant proposal resubmissionsMaintain documents that describe the Center for Health AI’s capabilities to support grant applications.For program applications, work with the Center leadership to design a strategy to use Center capabilities to craft a responsive, impactful application and work with the application PIs to implement this strategy in the form of a proposal.Work with investigators to develop other scientific and medical manuscripts or other documents as appropriateEstablish and maintain effective working relationships with investigatorsAssist with other duties associated with the Center for Health AI, as appropriate
Salary and Benefits: 

The hiring salary is :

Instructor- $70,000 - $85,000

Sr. Instructor $85,000-$110,000

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

Instructor

    Ph.D. in a scientific field with 2+ years of professional experience in scientific and medical writing or as a journal editor
Senior Instructor

    Ph.D. in a scientific field with 6+ years of professional experience in scientific and medical writing or as a journal editor
Preferred Qualifications

    Experience in an institution of higher education or large hospitalExperience working as an independent consultant or medical writerExperience as a professional editor at a scientific journal
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Excellent critical analysis skills Excellent written and verbal communication skillsAble to quickly acquire working knowledge regarding a variety of scientific/medical fieldsAble to establish effective collaborations with faculty investigators in various disciplinesAble to meet deadlinesAble to organize multiple tasks with varying deadlinesExperience assessing and conveying the impact of scientific work to a scientific audience
