Description
Post-Doctoral Research Associate- Department of Chemistry

This research post-doctoral appointment will be a split position (50/50), with responsibilities divided between working as an X-ray scientist for the Department of Chemistry and as a synthetic chemist in Dr. David Jenkins’s group.

Responsibilities and requirements for the X-ray scientist include:

1.   Operating and maintaining a Bruker single crystal X-ray diffractometer with APEX II detector.

2.   Training members of the department on the use of the Bruker single crystal diffractometer.

3.   Mounting crystals, collecting data, and solving crystal structures for members of the department (i.e., service structures).

4.   Repairing the instrument (when feasible).  Working with technicians to ascertain what repairs are required.

5.   Maintaining the X-ray facility in the Department of Chemistry, including safety protocols, logbooks, and user lists (all in compliance with Radiation Safety).

6.   Billing PIs and maintaining the X-ray cost center.  Communicating with relevant personnel about surplus or deficits.

Responsibilities and requirements for the chemist in Dr. Jenkins group include:

1.   Expertise in organic or organometallic synthesis is required, including air free synthesis (Schlenk technique and glovebox work).

2.   Proficiency with homogeneous catalyst testing is preferred.

3.   Experience designing and synthesizing complex (chiral or multi-functional group) ligands is valuable.

Since the position primarily entails a strong requisite knowledge of small molecule single crystal X-ray diffractometry, in addition to sending a CV and cover letter, candidates should include a list of published crystal structures that have been solved and their references.  Knowledge of powder X-ray diffraction techniques is advantageous, but not required.  Applicants who have a background only in powder X-ray diffraction will not be considered.  Candidates must have completed a PhD in chemistry or highly related field prior to the first day of appointment at UT.  The position is a contract for one year and is renewable (based on performance) for at least one additional year.  The position begins August 16, 2021 or on a mutually agreeable date.  Upload your CV and a cover letter which should include a list of published crystal structures at the end of the letter to the job posting on the UT HR website (https://hr.utk.edu/staff-positions/).  Questions about the position can be directed to Dr. Jenkins at jenkins@ion.chem.utk.edu.  Please be prepared to have 2-3 letters of recommendation submitted upon request.  Formal review of applications begins on July 15, 2021 and will continue until the position is filled.
