Job Description:


POSITION: FULL-TIME LEARING SPECIALIST (Lawrence & Salisbury): 18.75 hours at Lawrence Pre Release and Re-Entry Center, Lawrence, and 18.75 hours at Women in Transition Program, Salisbury. Grant-Funded; MCCC/MTA Unit Position; grade 5


RESPONSIBILITIES: The GED/HiSET/ESOL instruction improves the reading, writing, math, social studies and science and English language skills necessary to pass the HiSET or GED test, and to help students attain the necessary skills to succeed in continuing education, training and employment.


  • Provides individualized and small group instruction (i.e. - serves as course facilitator to assist students in completing computerized and/or self-paced course work and/or alternative study options; works with individual students as needed; determines student learning sequence requirements; collaborates with colleagues and other faculty on curriculum, student assessment and instructional materials; tutors students; administers tests, corrects completed tests and essays and assigns course grades and monitors student performance progress).
  • Develops course curricula and prepares/previews/evaluates instructional materials for courses (i.e. - develops comprehensive course curricula incorporating multiple media; prepares syllabi, tests, tutorials and instructional materials; selects text materials; prepares/sets up tests and materials for courses and evaluates assessment instruments, revising as needed).
  • Promotes a student-centered, cooperative learning environment that integrates current adult learning theory, College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRSAE) and English language Proficiency Standards for Adult Education (ELPS).
  • Teaches students the reading, writing, math, social studies, science and English skills necessary to pass the HiSET or GED test; or ESOL for English Language Learners.
  • Utilizes curriculum to inform teaching and develop lesson plans.
  • Utilizes research-based practices, current instructional methods, and current materials to ensure effective instruction.
  • Teaches in a correctional setting and interacts with an adult incarcerated population with possible medical, psychosocial, or educational deficits.
  • Works with Advisor/Job Developer to deliver specialized instruction in a secure setting.
  • Enters student attendance daily and updates inmate case plan, including the awarding of Earned Good Time and completes performance ratings on time each month and time sensitive documentation for program completion.
  • Communicates with colleagues via NECC email.
  • Uses technology to enhance student learning and increase student progress.
  • Uses Blackboard to enhance the delivery of academic content and digital literacy skills of students.
  • Works with program coordinator to develop and implement an annual professional development plan approved by the Executive Director and linked to the Continuous Improvement plan.
  • Works with Assessment staff to administer standardized testing to inmates including TABE, TABE CLAS-E, BestPlus 2.0.
  • Maintains inmate education files: performs monthly purge; processes incoming and outgoing files; and updates inmate educational documentation as needed.
  • Participates in an annual evaluation/performance review conducted by the Program Coordinator and Education Director.
  • Maintains electronic copies of lesson plans aligned to the program's curriculum, the CCRSAE and ELPs.
  • Works cooperatively with Education Director, Program Coordinator and Education Advisors/Job Developers to assist enrolled students in the development of a comprehensive education and career plan.
  • Will be required to complete 40-hour orientation and training within the fiscal year as well as maintaining current teaching license.
  • Attends annual pre-service day in August.
  • Performs other duties as requested by Program Coordinator or Education Director.

Requirements:


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Master's degree in required discipline, or closely related field; with one (1) year experience and/or training that includes teaching, instructional technology or program development; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience teaching multi-cultural students.
  • Ability to teach all five (5) HiSET/GED subject areas or ESOL.
  • Working familiarity with College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education and English Language Proficiency Standards for Adult Education.
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office, Internet, email.
  • Excellent communication skills - written, oral, interpersonal.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with ethnic, cultural, socially diverse populations in a multi-campus environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • K-12 and/or Adult Education teaching experience.
  • Master's degree in Education.
  • Experience working in a correctional facility.
  • Bilingual fluency - English/Spanish.
  • Experience working with and supporting a culturally diverse, urban population in a Hispanic-Serving Institution


Additional Information:


SALARY: Anticipated starting salary range is $59,244.00 - $69,336.00 annually with complete fringe benefit package including competitive health insurance, free dental insurance, basic life insurance, long-term disability insurance, paid sick and personal leave, educational benefits for employee/spouse/dependents, and excellent retirement benefits; Actual salary calculated in compliance with MCCC/MTA classification system; Paygrade 5.
