Overview

Reporting to the Business Manager, and under minimal supervision, this position provides support for all financial activities within the Department of Politics, including the James Madison Program and the Bobst Center for Peace and Justice. Politics is a diverse and dynamic department of 55 faculty, some jointly appointed with other academic units, and approximately 140 full-time Ph.D. students, 150 undergraduate concentrators, and 35 staff, as well as numerous postdocs and visitors.

Responsibilities
  • Review, approve and create requisitions, Marketplace orders, vouchers, honorarium payments and other transactions prepared by other staff members. Review and approve credit card transactions that have been verified by other staff members. Ensure compliance with University financial policies, donor restrictions and other contractual obligations and collect, review, and maintain appropriate documentation accordingly.
  • Respond to faculty and staff inquiries regarding accounts, transactions, policies and procedures. Communicate with staff from Finance and Treasury and other offices when necessary to resolve questions or issues.
  • Analyze financial activity in the department, including the James Madison Program and Bobst Center. Prepare budgets and written reports.
  • Reconcile transactions to department accounts. Resolve issues identified during reconciliation process.
  • Assist the Business Manager with other special projects and duties as necessary.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business or operations management or related field and 3-5 years of relevant work experience. Experience in accounting and working knowledge of accounting principles required. Extensive knowledge of and experience using Microsoft Excel, including the ability to create reports. Experience with budget development, financial analysis and reporting. Ability to work independently and simultaneously on multiple projects, meet deadlines, and maintain a high level of accuracy and confidentiality in a fast-paced environment. Strong organizational skills, accuracy, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral). Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with accounting in a non-profit or educational organization preferred. Experience with PeopleSoft, Concur and other University financial systems preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of University financial policies preferred.
