Summary of Duties:

The Grants Financial Specialist reports to the International Grants Manager of the Paul. G. Allen School for Global Animal Health (Allen School) supporting the operations of the unit both in the United States and internationally. The Allen School international portfolio includes collaborations with sub-awardees and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Kenya, Tanzania, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Guatemala. This position analyzes complex data, advising faculty and leading the work of team members employed with the international NGOs. The position analyzes funding opportunities and interprets funding agency guidelines to advise and support faculty members on proposal development and submission and develops written procedures and guidance for proposals to funding agencies including NIH, NSF, CDC, USAID, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and others. The position works closely with project PIs on preparation of complex budgets and other proposal components. The position serves as a liaison between WSU and sponsor agencies and between the Department and relevant WSU research administration offices and ensures proposals adhere to sponsor, federal, international and WSU policies. The position also actively participates in post-award administration of major extramural international projects, including supporting WSU and international staff in the development of contractual arrangements with international institutions, submitting budget revisions, and development of continuation applications and carryover requests.

While the normal work schedule is Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., there are time the work hours will be adjust to meet the needs of international partners. This can include early morning, evening hours after 5:00 p.m., or weekends. Additionally there may be a need for occasional international travel.

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree, which includes 18 quarter or 12 semester hours in accounting, auditing, or budgeting and two (2) years of relevant professional experience, or equivalent education/experience.

This position is based on the WSU Pullman campus. This position may be eligible for a partial remote work options. Remote work opportunities will be discussed at time of interview.

Additional Requirements:

  • Proficiency in: Microsoft Excel; Microsoft Word.

  • Ability to synthesize and summarize complex written and budgetary information.

  • Experience working with grant funding. Knowledge of grant funding policies and procedures.

  • Must be flexible to adjust hours as needed and the direction of the supervisor, to accommodate work hours of international partners. This can include early morning, evening hours after 5 pm, or weekends.

  • Experience working in a business office.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in higher education.

  • Experience working with International Non-Government Organizations.

  • Currently obtained WSU budget certified.

  • Experience with contracting procedures (pre-award and post-award).

  • Experience working the Workday platform.

  • Editing and professional writing experience.

  • A Bachelors degree in Business Administration or related field.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
