JOB SUMMARY: This position ensures the safety of patrons of the Middle Georgia State University aquatic facility by preventing and responding to emergencies, during the months of pool operation, which are generally April through September.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility, acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
  • Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service.
  • Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.
  • Prepares and maintains appropriate activity reports.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by head lifeguard or Director.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • This position requires certification as a lifeguard by the American Red Cross
  • American Red Cross CPR and AED certification required
  • Knowledge of university rules and procedures.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Skill in the application of lifeguard surveillance and rescue techniques
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical skills evaluation as stipulated by the department
  • Ability to competently complete related logs and paperwork
  • High quality customer service skill

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Wellness Center Coordinator assigns work to best meet the needs of aquatic facility patrons and students. The supervisor spot-checks work in progress and upon completion for accuracy, adequacy, and adherence to instructions and established guidelines.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include University System of Georgia (USG), Middle Georgia State University (MGA), and The American Red Cross rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. These guidelines are clear and specific, requiring little interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:

  • The work consists of management of the university aquatics area as prescribed by both MGA and The American Red Cross guidelines.
  • The purpose of this position is to oversee the university’s aquatics area/pool. Success performance in this position results in a safe and enjoyable environment for all MGA pool patrons.

CONTACTS:

  • Contacts are typically with the wellness center coordinator, co-workers, other university personnel and students, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, or to promote events.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a lifeguard station or while intermittently swimming, sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between safe and unsafe practices around the pool area.
  • The work is typically outdoors, usually in hot weather. The employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts.
  • Weekend work is required.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a current enrolled MGA student.
  • Must be enrolled in 6 or more semester hours per semester.
  • Must have a GPA of 2.0 or greater.
  • This position requires certification as a lifeguard by the American Red Cross
  • American Red Cross CPR and AED certification required

COMPENSATION CLASSIFICATION:

  • Non-exempt, hourly, paid bi-weekly
  • Student (part-time)
