JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Director provides operational support to the Center for Career & Leadership Development (CCLD) while also leading initiatives to increase student involvement in internships and other career preparation experiences to support the career readiness of MGA students. The Assistant Director facilitates outreach with employers to develop internships and partnerships that support student learning around career preparedness and workplace readiness. In addition, the Assistant Director develops and implements career education and networking opportunities that prepare students for the internship application process and the professional transition to the world of work. The Assistant Director works closely with faculty and serves as a liaison with academic departments on behalf of the CCLD in order to facilitate collaboration related to career and leadership development programs. In addition, the Assistant Director provides individualized and group career advising to students, both in-person and virtually.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Liaison/Outreach

  • Develop relationships with employers to develop and promote internship, shadowing and other career preparation opportunities for MGA Students.
  • Manage and coordinate MGA internship partnership program to support pipelines of student interns.
  • Consult and communicate with academic departments frequently to understand their internship needs, facilitate industry connections, and provide support to their students.
  • Work with the Director to strategize and lead department relationships with employers and academic departments.
  • Participate in networking and workforce development opportunities that build relationships between industry and the university.

Career & Professional Development Programming

  • Develop, plan, and implement career fairs, panels, and other career networking programs for students in collaboration with academic and student affairs departments.
  • Develop, implement, and promote career and professional development education and resources for students preparing for academic and non-academic internship experiences.
  • Prepare and present career and professional development presentations and workshops to classes, student organizations, and other student-oriented audiences.
  • Oversee processes for professional development initiatives for the department.
  • Collaborate with Coordinator for Student Leadership Programs on career readiness initiatives.

Advising

  • Advise and coach students seeking internships and other experiential career preparation experiences on job search and career networking strategies as well as resume development, interviewing, and professionalism.
  • Provides career advising and coaching to students on job and graduate school search strategies to supplement career advisors when needed.
  • Establish and promote weekly office hours on the Cochran campus in addition to regular hours in Macon and online to support students preparing for internships.
  • Uses occupational information to advise students on training/educational pathways; skills; experience; average salary; and other requirements for particular careers.
  • Provides career assessment and interpretation to students exploring major and career options.
  • Identifies as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).

Administration/Planning

  • Manage, oversee, and promote internship database to students, employers, and faculty, using Handshake and other internal tools.
  • Provide departmental leadership for training and overseeing student assistants, interns, and peer advisors.
  • Create and establish a university-wide internship manual and supporting resources for students and employers to understand academic and non-academic processes.
  • Develop, implement, and manage career advising processes and resources for students seeking internships, shadowing, part-time jobs, or other experiential career preparation experiences for students across the university.
  • Use data to stay current on evolving market and employer hiring trends, internship trends, shifts in demand and professional skills needed to succeed in the current environment.
  • Maintains ongoing professional development via involvement with relevant professional associations.

Assessment

  • Develop and implement systems and processes of gathering and organizing data about student internship experiences and professional development activities, impacts and outcomes for both assessment and marketing/outreach purposes.
  • Develop, implement, and manage process for collecting career and learning outcomes data on students completing internships.
  • Manage tracking of academic department partnerships for the entire department.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of career development models, student development, internship best practices, professional skills needed by employers, employment trends, legal issues in employment pertaining to internships, and employer cultivation in the context of higher education.
  • Knowledge of the local, regional, and national job market.
  • Knowledge of state and federal employment laws.
  • Knowledge of career competencies and ethical guidelines developed by the National Association of College and Employers (NACE).
  • Knowledge of effective assessment strategies to inform programs and practices.
  • Skill in the program development and delivery models for career development to a diverse student body.
  • Skill in career management systems, software programs, and other technical tools.
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.
  • Skill in developing relationships with employers to develop internship opportunities.
  • Skill in developing relationships with faculty to promote departmental services and programs and create collaborations for student internships.
  • Skill in oral and written communication, marketing and public relations.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Director for Career & Leadership Development assigns work in terms of unit goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports and observation of unit activities.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department, University, and University System of Georgia policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:

  • The purpose of this position is to promote the importance of internships to the university and prepare students so that they are successful in obtaining these positions. Success in this position links more students and employers together through internships.
  • The work consists of varied administrative, communication/outreach, programmatic, and career and professional development duties. Understanding the unique needs of employers and students and the relationship of faculty to the process is imperative for the position.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, students, business leaders, potential employers, alumni, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to provide services, to motivate or influence persons, or to justify, defend or settle matters.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The work is very active, requiring physical activity/mobility. Also requires travel to various campus locations and employer sites.
  • The work is performed in an office and in various on campus and off campus settings including classrooms, event venues, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position will have supervisory responsibility for student assistants on their main campus location and will develop, initiate, and support hiring processes for all student assistants for the Center for Career & Leadership Development.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in a related field
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written and verbal communication, technical, and collaboration skills
  • Experience relevant to the major duties of the position, usually having had a similar position for 2 or more years
  • Experience supervising/coaching/ evaluating student and/or staff members
  • Experience working with campus/community partners.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours when necessary.
COMPENSATION CLASSIFICATION:
  • This position is exempt (monthly paid).
  • Pay grade 20.
