Job Summary
Columbus State University has an opening for an Assistant Chief / Major in the University Police Department. This position will report to the Chief of Police under the Division of Student Affairs. As the second-in-command law enforcement officer for the university, the Assistant Chief is responsible for the daily leadership, strategic planning, and management of a growing university police department. The Assistant Chief of Police helps direct a department of 29 sworn officers and 10 civilian personnel. There are five divisions including Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Security Technology, Training, and Certification. Responsibilities will include directing and coordinating, through subordinate supervisors, department activities; reviewing and analyzing reports, records, and directives, and conferring with the Chief to obtain data required for planning department activities, such as new commitments, status of work in progress, and problems encountered; assisting in assigning, or delegating responsibility for specified work or functional activities and disseminates policy to staff; giving work directions, resolving problems, preparing schedules, and setting deadlines to ensure timely completion of work; assisting in coordinating activities for the department with related activities of other departments to ensure efficiency and economy; and evaluating current procedures and practices for accomplishing department objectives to develop and implement improved procedures and practices.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Direction and coordination of day to day operations of the police department
  • Evaluates current procedures and practices for accomplishing and improving departmental objectives
  • Reviews, analyze reports and records for accuracy
  • Support the University's mission, and student success while enforcing the law of the State of Georgia.
  • Establish vision and goals for the department
  • Works towards funding for objectives
  • Ensure required training requirements such as POST are maintained
  • Ensure federal reporting guidelines such as Clery are met
  • Maintains fiscal responsibility of annual departmental budget
  • Oversees personnel matters such as hiring, promoting and disciplinary action
  • Provides annual activity reports to the Board of Regents as well as yearly updates to executive leadership team
  • Management of internal affairs and investigations.

Required Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field; a minimum of ten years of law enforcement experience with five or more years in a supervisory capacity at the command level; five or more years of experience in a college or university setting; must be eligible for the Peace Officer Basic Law Enforcement Certification by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council, or be able to attain this certification within one year of employment; ability to use a firearm safely and accurately is crucial; and must have a valid driver's license.

The qualified candidate must be committed to student success through a community oriented policing philosophy; demonstrate leadership through a strong example of integrity, inclusion, and transparency; possess extensive knowledge of law enforcement policies, and accreditation standards relevant to a higher education setting; possess a working knowledge of NIMS and ICS; have experience in developing emergency operations and incident action plans; have experience in human resource's rules and regulations; demonstrate organizational, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, and a commitment to diversity; be committed to developing and maintaining working relationships with various departments and organizations throughout campus; and have experience in conducting and managing internal affairs and internal investigations.

Specific physical abilities required by this job include good physical health, 20/20 vision or vision correctable to 20/20, ability to hear and speak clearly, walk, run, jump and lift 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include a Master's degree in Criminal Justice Administration or Public Administration and completion of a nationally recognized program related to management or leadership, such as the National Academy (FBI), Georgia's Command College, SPI's Administrative Officer's Course or North Western University School of Police and Command.

Proposed Salary
The annualized salary range for this position is $70,162 - $79,149 and includes full benefits.

The selection process for police officers is intended to identify those candidates that are best suited for a rewarding and challenging career in law enforcement.
