Departmental Overview

The ASUC Student Union is the hub of student life on the UC Berkeley campus. Committed to all students and an inclusive campus community, the Student Union enhances the student experience by providing quality services and programs that foster experiential learning opportunities and ensures a balanced learning environment. As a partially financially self- supporting department within the Division of Student Affairs, it derives income through student fees; retail operations such as the Amazon Hub, Bank of the West, The Cal Student Store, vending, food service, and a variety of self-operated units such the Berkeley Art Studio, Publications and Media Center, Creative Lab, and Events Services. In addition, the ASUC Student Union provides the ASUC student government and organizations with financial and marketing services.

This position sits within Creative Lab, a graphic design, education, and print service within the ASUC Student Union. Creative Lab works with campus partners to serve their graphic design and digital media needs for marketing their programs. This position's time will be spent fulfilling the needs of the Career Center (45%) and the Student Union's Creative Lab (50%), as well as other duties as assigned (5%).

Responsibilities

GRAPHIC DESIGN:
  • Under general supervision, plans, develops and implements basic marketing and/or sales plans, strategies and/or events for small or non-complex projects.
  • Coordinates workflow of promotional materials and products designed to promote awareness of the programs within the Dean of Students portfolio.
  • Designs, develops, and creates marketing/public relations and promotional materials for print, web, multi-media and motion graphics, using primarily a Mac computer systems and Adobe Creative Suite. Print design collateral includes (but not limited to) multi-page layouts, brochures, posters, calendars, advertisements, fliers, logos, signs, promotional displays. Digital design collateral includes (but not limited to) website graphics, social media graphics, digital monitor displays, and presentations.
  • Researches project assignments, develops ideas and design comprehensives, and produces final products or campaigns consistent with the initial research or supplied event information.
  • Drafts and/or edits copy for marketing projects or programs such publications, advertisements, brochures, announcements, et cetera.
  • Establishes project parameters, materials, production schedules, and project costs.
  • Administers the design and communication services work order system.

COLLABORATION AND CLIENT CONTACT:
  • Interfaces with staff who submit design and production requests.
  • May work closely with staff from recreational Sports and the Career Center, along with other design related departments.
  • Creates marketing campaigns for annual large scale events in coordination with campus units and sponsors, such as the Student Union Open House, Calapalooza, Cal Day, Caltopia, Golden Bear Orientation, Career Fairs, etc.
  • Develops creative materials and collaborates with outside campus sponsors on development opportunities, including collateral logos and securing approval for all logo related content prior to events or campaigns.
  • Represents Creative Lab through building relationships with the campus community, the public, and other University departments.
  • Interfaces with appropriate campus entities to secure any needed permissions and to stay compliant with established posting policies.
  • Researches and secures copyright and other legal clearances for publications, products, et cetera, keeping senior management informed as necessary.

DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS:
  • Coordinates activities including promotional websites, social media, and email campaigns designed to promote awareness of the Dean of Student's portfolio of services, programs and products within the campus community and to the general public.
  • Creates, develops, produces and coordinates events on social media and other online outlets.
  • Prepares program materials for dissemination through the media, internet and relevant institutional components.
  • Leads appropriate online messaging for UC Berkeley, Recreational Sports, Career Center, and other units within the Dean of Students portfolio.
  • Appropriately follows all online branding standards/guidelines.
  • Leads email marketing campaigns from design to deployment.
  • Leads Social Media campaigns for the Student Union in order to market events, programs, services, & sponsorships.

PRODUCTION AND MAINTENANCE:
  • Proofs and verifies accuracy of work. Reviews all materials for spelling, punctuation, grammar, consistency, format and spacing.
  • Performs pre-production checks and approves final copy before the commencement of printing production runs.
  • Responsible for on-campus distribution of printed posters and banners for clients including maintenance of a-frames, banners, and other external signage.
  • Coordinates and schedules printing and vendor services in the preparation of final products.
  • Manages and organizes creative collateral portfolio for the various units, including digital and analog files. Develops historical files and implements scheduled data archiving.

Required Qualifications
  • Solid knowledge of marketing principles, concepts, strategies and best practices.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to gain knowledge of the campus including its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives and infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards/procedures.
  • Organizational skills and skills in file creation, maintenance and management.
  • Written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in industry standards of the graphic design field with extensive knowledge of the principles of print, typeface, color, layout, and production techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience with the design, layout, and implementation of final artwork into a visual product, including ability to conceptualize and storyboard ideas.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Apple computers and peripheral devices such as scanners, printers, and digital cameras.
  • Demonstrated extensive experience and proficiency with graphic design software, including Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency in industry standards of digital design, especially in the design of Wordpress websites.
  • Must possess good time/project management skills for working in and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate, and establish project production schedules, work independently with little direction and coordinate many different tasks, determining the importance of each, setting deadlines and completing projects accordingly.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associates or Bachelors degree in graphic design and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits
