Multicultural Student Development (MSD) is charged with developing programs, activities, and strategies that promote students' academic progress and success by engaging them through multicultural practices that acknowledge and celebrate their individual and collective experiences. The unit coordinates a series of academic courses and educational and multicultural activities through its five offices (African American Student Development, Asian Pacific, American Student Development, Chicano/Latino Student Development, Multicultural Community Center, Native American Student Development). The unit is a key campus partner in helping the campus create an inclusive environment for multiple student populations and minimizing the intergroup tensions that on other campuses have resulted in disruptive and highly publicized bias-related incidents.
Fannie Lou Hamer Black Resource Center (FLHBRC) is a campus center responsible for ensuring UC Berkeley's policies and practices, programs and services and overall campus climate is welcoming to all African American/Black students in ways that ensure the students' success. The staff FLHBRC collaborates with campus partners to provide leadership advising on ethnic specific and multicultural issues that promote students' academic success and ensures their full access and participation in campus life. The staff works across MSD to address the complexities of creating inclusive spaces and experiences for students of multiple cultural and social identities and ensuring that the university community is equipped with the resources and information to facilitate the inclusion of community members across all identities. This is achieved through developing programs, activities, and strategies that engage students in multicultural practices that acknowledge and celebrate their individual and collective experiences and providing multicultural expertise to campus administrators. Together with their colleagues in the other MSD units the staff Fannie Lou Hamer Black Resource center provide advising, advocacy, support, resources and programs aimed at increasing retention, inclusion and understanding across the campus community on issues of race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, sexual and relationship violence as well as bias-related incidents. FLHBRC advises undergraduate and graduate students who are underrepresented, low income, first generation, among others.
Specifically, the Fannie Lou Hamer Black Resource Center creates academic, community and social spaces to foster critical dialog across race and ethnicity; works to create a sense of inclusion for students who perceive and experience Berkeley as unwelcoming; educates, advocates and builds community across differences; and develops student leaders for a multicultural world. The Assistant Director helps to carry out policies, procedures and programs in the Fannie Lou Hamer Black Resource Center. This includes developing and implementing programs and strategies that create a sense of inclusion for students who view Berkeley as unwelcoming; providing opportunities for students from different groups within the Black community to share their perspectives; building community across differences; and promoting students' academic success and retention. The Fannie Lou Hamer Black Resource Center serves undergraduate and graduate students who are underrepresented, low income, first generation, among others.
Involves providing individualized services to students who are underrepresented, low income, first generation college students, and/or otherwise at a higher risk of experiencing academic difficulty, to help students succeed. Services may include academic advising, academic needs assessment, developing individual study plans, recognizing and addressing academic and non-academic barriers to academic success, and counseling on other aspects that may affect student retention and academic success. Includes specializations in particular underrepresented groups, particular academic skills (e.g., research skills, preparation for graduate programs), or success in particular academic programs.
African American, Black, African Diaspora and other Multicultural Advising.
- Provides services that support and guide African American/Black undergraduate and graduate student success, provides advising about academic and personal development resources to students engaged in ethnic specific, multicultural, and/or cross cultural studies, programs, services, and organizations. Refers students to appropriate campus and community services.
- Plans develops and implements advising strategies that address campus climate issues impacting students individually and in students organizations.
- Conducts comprehensive analyses of students' issues and needs and provides solutions and alternatives to problem areas.
- Helps students develop strategies to solve academic and personal problems.
- Assists students with the academic research process, including developing a question and hypothesis, selecting appropriate quantitative or qualitative research methods, evaluating evidence, and writing reports.
- Plans, develops, and implements programs, services, activities, and strategies that promote critical dialogue and social change around multiculturalism, campus climate, and issues of equity and inclusion.
- Works with student groups on planning their events. Determines and coordinates staffing and other logistical needs.
- Assures issues of safety, security, and risk management are addressed. Mentors and develops student staff (on event management and procedures) Assesses program effectiveness and recommends changes in program content, procedures, and policies, as appropriate. Recommends the development of new activities and programs.
- Coordinates the development, editing, and publication of academic journals, programs, websites, brochures and marketing materials. Coordinates the content of Fannie Lou Hamer Black Resource Center's newsletters. Assists in preparing proposals for extramural funding.
- Coordinates and manages the space of the Fannie Lou Hamer Black Resource Center. Also helps create policies for Fannie Lou Hamer Black Resource Center.
Student Leadership Development
- Hires, trains, mentors, and supervises the work of undergraduate and graduate student coordinators and interns in close partnership with the AASD Director. Facilitates collaborative group processes and uses innovative pedagogical models. Leads and creates curriculum for weekly seminars designed to promote students' academic successes ess and retention, personal development, and leadership formation.
- Acts as instructor, lecturer and grader for African American Theme Program under the African American Studies Department.
- Facilitates group discussion sessions. Plans, implements, and teaches academic and personal development seminars/courses.
- Hires, trains, and supervises the work of graduate interns and paraprofessionals.
Campus Leadership and Collaborative Relationships
- Develops and maintains relationships with stakeholders, on and off campus, critical to program success. Involves serving as a liaison with other programs and organizations on campus and in community; an convening and facilitating meetings of the FLHBRC Advisory Board. Promotes collaborations among various student, staff, faculty, and community constituencies with interests in social justice, equity and inclusion.
- Works with academic departments, faculty, and department management to help resolve specific student academic issues.
- Keeps abreast of changing and evolving trends regarding African American/Black students, multicultural education/counseling, multicultural education, identity, student development theories.
- Keeps abreast of student trends in higher education, particularly low-income and first-generation college populations.
Other duties as assigned, including:
- Special projects membership in campus committees and work teams, and so forth.
Subject Matter Expertise
- Knowledge of the histories, theories, and practice of African American/Black thought, multiculturalism, multicultural student development and student leadership development.
- Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance students' academic and personal development, such as collaborative and student-centered teaching/learning models, small group facilitation, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy.
- Knowledge of trends and issues facing students from low-income, underrepresented, multiracial, multiethnic,mixed-race, mixed-ethnic, immigrant, refugee, disability, and/or lgbtqia+_ backgrounds.
- Knowledge of community, labor, youth, and/or student organizing.
- Knowledge of research methodology and design.
- Experience collecting and analyzing data, and generating reports.
Interpersonal and Communication Skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse communities of students, staff, and faculty.
- Highly developed interpersonal and public communication skills including political acumen, social/cultural perceptiveness, conflict management, and interventions strategies.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of concepts, principles, and practices of multicultural event planning and campus-community relations, including event design, organization, and production.
- Knowledge and experience analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions to solve problems; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of students.
- Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Two to three years of professional experience in related area.
- Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary will be commensurate with experience up to $68,000.00
