Job Description Summary
The Vice Dean of Administration and Finance reports to the Dean of the School of Nursing and functions as a senior member of the Dean's leadership team and as a key contributor to strategy development. The Vice Dean supports the School's educational and research programs and day to day operations. A visible and influential leader within the school and at Penn, the Vice Dean serves as the School's Chief Operating Officer, holding senior managerial and fiduciary responsibilities in all financial matters, including a budget of nearly $100 million. The Vice Dean directs School-wide administrative and financial operations with oversight of administration, finances, facilities, operations, computing and information technology, faculty and staff affairs. The Vice Dean represents the Dean and serves as a spokesperson for the School to the executive and financial levels of the University.

Job Description
  • Serve as a senior member of the Dean's team and a key contributor to, and developer of, strategic decisions. Oversee School-wide budget with operations, budget planning, capital planning, funding priorities, financial analysis and managerial oversight responsibility for maintaining and ensuring the solid financial position of the School. Attend the Dean's Advisory Group meetings and be an active participant.
  • Lead, manage and contribute to the professional development of the 4 direct reports: Director of Business and Finance, Executive Director of Computing and Information Technology and Facilities Planning, Chief People Officer and Program Coordinator of Office of Administration. Work closely to ensure business process improvement in all areas and operational efficiencies across the School. Partners with leaders to oversee the operations, budgeting and strategic direction of other administrative functions including the Office of Academic Affairs, the Office of Nursing Research (this office has a dotted line to the Vice Dean), the Office of Institutional Advancement, and academic departments.
  • Direct the overall planning and organization of the School of Nursing including: strategic planning, policy implementation and development, new initiatives, organizational development and resource allocation. Ensure compliance with internal and external agencies, inclusive of federal and non-federal sponsored programs.
  • Assessment of budget implications of new and continuing initiatives to ensure sustainable finances; advise Dean, Associate Deans and Department Chairs on the impact of resource allocation decisions and commitments. Develop long-term plans and/or models to project the impact of changes or new assumptions affecting the school's human, financial and space resources.
  • Demonstrates and utilizes exemplary planning, collaboration, communication and benchmarking in problem solving. Exhibit visionary, visible, exemplary and inspirational leadership in words and actions. Delegate effectively while maintaining appropriate oversight and focus on both the short- term goals and long-term strategies of the School.
  • Embodies the School's Guiding Principles for Learning and Working Together: Embraces Diversity and Inclusion; Treats Others with Respect; Acts with Empathy, Engages in Dialogue to Learn; Strives for Excellence of a good citizen in actions with colleagues at the School of Nursing and throughout the University. Qualifications

A Master's Degree or higher and over 10 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

A successful Vice Dean will be sensitive to and able to adapt to the unique culture of a university environment with both its spirit of academic independence as well as administrative constraints. The person will have a successful track record of leading and motivating a staff of highly driven professional and administrative personnel. The Vice Dean must possess a high energy level and an optimism with an orientation toward action, but with a comfort to work in ambiguity. The person will be data-driven, but not risk averse, and must be able to encourage trust and transparency by their actions. Experience in an academic environment with a strong emphasis on education and research is preferred.

The successful candidate will have a record of leading multiple functions within a complex organization, preferably within higher education. The School of Nursing requires a Vice Dean with vision, proven leadership ability and a strategic and innovative thinker. This position requires strong negotiation, communication and listening skills. The incumbent must have a strong professional presence and the ability to influence others.
