SCHOOL/UNIT DESCRIPTION:

The Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials (GLAM) is seeking a full time lab manager to join Professor Yi Cui's Lab.

The Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials (GLAM) is an independent laboratory that supports and fosters interdisciplinary education and research on advanced materials in science and engineering. The Laboratory supports the research activities of more than 30 faculty members from the departments of Applied Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Physics.

Professor Yi Cui's Lab Overview: The Cui lab is one of the largest research groups (+50 people) at Stanford University. The lab research topics focus on understanding a broad range of nanoscale properties including electronic, photonic, electrochemical, mechanical, catalytic and interfacial properties. The lab studies fundamentals of nanomaterials including nanowires, colloidal nanocrystals and patterned nanostructures, and developing low-cost processings and addressing critical issues in real-world applications including energy storage (e.g., lithium-ion and lithium metal batteries), advanced materials synthesis and fabrication, photovoltaics, topological insulator, nanoscale paper and textile technologies, nanobiotechnology, nanoscale tools, and nano-environmental technologies. POSITION SUMMARY:

The lab manager strives to run the lab safely and efficiently. The lab manager manages the engineering lab day-to-day operations, including lab organization, data and file management, and safety. The lab manager works closely with the PI and the Cui lab safety coordinators to implement health & safety programs to ensure the health and safety of the lab members and compliance with environmental and health and safety statutes and regulations, and Stanford University's health and safety policies and programs. The lab manager collaborates with the building manager and the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Research Safety team to ensure health and safety compliance. This position reports to Professor Yi Cui.

CORE DUTIES:
  • Administer health and safety programs and ensure safety compliance; act as resource on safety procedures; liaise with EH&S Research Safety team
  • Oversee and collaborate with a group of Cui lab safety coordinators to implement the health and safety programs
  • Develop and provide onboarding safety training to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and external research collaborators and manage the lab personnel exit process
  • Develop, deliver, and document lab-specific training (e.g., specialized equipment usage), standard-operating procedures, and risk assessments
  • Manage and track compliance on safety training for lab members and collaborators
  • Purchase chemicals and manage chemical inventory to ensure compliance with County and State regulations
  • Conduct regular laboratory walkthroughs to identify safety challenges, recommend and ensure follow up of corrective actions in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance of the laboratory with hazardous waste storage and disposal requirements
  • Purchase new laboratory equipment, maintain instrument calibrations, and coordinate preventative maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment
  • Assist the PI with incident reporting, investigation, and corrective action completion
  • Manage laboratory storage space and office assignments
  • Manage the storage of lab data, manuscript and publication files
  • Manage group and subgroup meetings scheduling
  • Other duties may also be assigned


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • MS or higher degree desired in Chemical Engineering/Material Science/Chemistry or a related discipline
  • Lab management experience in academia or industry
  • Familiarity with occupational hazards in chemistry labs
  • Familiarity with California and Santa Clara County health and safety compliance regulations


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Understanding of academic research facility needs.
  • General background in a discipline related to the work of specific lab(s).
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple budgets.
  • Knowledge and experience in managing facilities, operations, maintenance, space, and equipment administration in a research or teaching setting.
  • Excellent communication and customer services skills.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects in a complex and technical environment.
  • Familiarity with health and safety compliance regulations.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May require work in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research.
  • May be exposed to radiation or electromagnetic fields.
  • Must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, etc.
  • May work extended or unusual work hours due to research or project requirements and peak work cycles. After hours on-call availability required.
