Job Description
The University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine (UMSOM) is seeking a Program Director to oversee the Health Equity and Population Program and Center for Research and Aging in the Epidemiology and Public Health department.  UMB offers a comprehensive and competitive benefits package to eligible employees. Exemptions for medical or religious reasons will be processed through Human Resources. Essential Functions:  
  • Provide primary administrative leadership for the Health Disparities program directed by Drs. Jones and Hager and the Center for Research on Aging directed by Dr. Magaziner.
  • Assist with short and long-term strategic planning, develop strategies for programmatic success; engage leadership, alumni, donors and campus resources to highlight and promote the department
  • Organize and/or participate in various committees and teams to consult with program heads and administrative officials on policy and program needs as well as various administrative, PR, and outreach issues.
  • Prepare and submit Department’s and Center’s annual reports; prepare letters of agreement, intent, support/recommendation, and other ad-hoc reports (e.g., recruitment/expansion plans, return-to-campus plans)
  • Manage multiple student awards and endowments; promote awards annually through a coordinated effort. Maintain award criteria, review committee documentation, and applications; work with business staff to process awards through the Foundation and/or University. 
  • Serve as primary department contact for a publicity and public relations; liase with SOM and campus public relations, as appropriate. Collaborate with senior leadership and faculty to plan, implement and monitor communication strategies. Work with internal communications staff to publicize on department web pages, social media and so forth.
  • Manage and coordinate academic alumni database; coordinate the use of databases to analyze criteria and deliver data, as well as to monitor, evaluate, and revise program operating policies and procedures. 
  • Plan and coordinate annual endowment lectures, graduation ceremony, and town hall meetings and other special department-wide gatherings as needed.
  • Conduct research, literature review, prepare and contribute to a host of medical and academic reports, op-eds, briefings, talking points, speeches/presentation on an array of topics. Produce announcements, advertisements, and other correspondence.  Prepare chair’s monthly letter.
  • Act as the ambassador at the UMB campus by representing the department to external constituents.


Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree. Master's degree preferred. Experience: Six (6) years of program oversight including program planning, budget, and coordination.  Certification/Licensure: Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
  • Superior communication skills both written and orally.  Comfort in interacting with all types of faculty, scientists, guests with confidence, creativity and maturity; ability to communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts with all audiences, and to strengthen and cultivate relationships.  Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas in writing in a clear and concise manner. Writing samples will be requested.
  • Knowledge of best practices in departmental field.
  • Ability to understand and utilize public health terminology.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and resourcefulness necessary to prioritize multiple ongoing and new projects and work in a fast-paced academic environment.
  • Ability to work as part of a team while maintaining a lead role.
  • Skill in continuously seeking to improve the quality of services and processes.
  • Computer skills in relevant design and/or office applications.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and to demonstrate professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others.
