The Associate Director of Foundation Relations will be assigned core coverage areas of the UR (i.e.: Medical Center, College, Eastman School of Music) as a concentration but will be cross-trained to provide Foundation Relations support across other non-assigned divisions as needed. The Associate Director will become a subject matter expert in his/her prime assigned divisions, and have a strong working knowledge of the history and the current goals, strengths and priorities of the UR’s various divisions and programs. Duties will include all aspects of the Foundation Relations pipeline from research and cultivation, to proposal development and stewardship. Working with increased autonomy and independence, the Associate Director will be responsible for developing in-depth understanding of relevant foundation prospects identified as potential “matches” with UR fundraising priorities in the Associate Director coverage areas. The Associate Director will be responsible for maintaining and updating the Foundation Relation's client prospect matrices for their priority areas / programs. The Associate Director will work with the AVP and Foundation Relations team to develop cultivation and solicitation strategies for these prospects; provide in depth research and analysis of prospects. The Associate Director will provide critical insight/feedback on competitive proposal development and write or assist with the preparation of concept papers, letters of inquiry, proposals, stewardship reports, and all other Foundation Relations correspondence; develop productive working relationships with foundation officers, UR faculty and staff, and Advancement colleagues; plan, track and maintain effective stewardship of donors.

Responsibilities

25% Responsible for pro-active, autonomous cultivation and solicitation of assigned foundation prospects. Builds internal relationships with faculty, dept. chairs, division chiefs, and other key stakeholders (e.g. ORPA, Dept. Admins.) to develop in-depth understanding of priority programs and projects; and works closely with the appropriate UR Advancement departments to coordinate advancement efforts.

25% Conducts independent in-depth analysis/research on UR assigned program areas – and relevant national comparisons- through independent research of the field and by developing strong working relationships with faculty and leadership, and other key stakeholders (admins. etc.) Also develops in-depth research and analysis of all assigned foundation prospects utilizing the research, analysis and tracking tools available and by developing working relationships with foundation officers, when possible. Manages contacts with foundation officers to insure full understanding of foundation interests, eligibility requirements and capacity.

20% Focuses on the highest impact activities and balances efforts and varying foundation application processes accordingly, paying special attention to development and management of effective solicitation strategies. Develops keen understanding and sensitivity to the UR political landscape, compliance processes and protocol ensuring that messaging/work across the UR is conducted with the highest level of discretion and professional decorum. Maintains active and regular contact with significant prospects, and, in collaboration with the AVP, produces an appropriate number (25 - 35) of competitive proposals and closes an appropriate number /amount (~$1 M) gifts each year

20% independently and proactively tracks and manages foundation stewardship of top prospects and works directly with PI’s to ensure that reports are thorough, compelling and submitted on time.

10% The Assoc. Dir. will help the AVP oversee the on-going updating of internal and external benchmarking including through the development of COEUS and OASIS FR reports. The Assoc. Dir. will also assist in the development of an FR website.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have a bachelor's degree; a minimum of 5 years’ experience, working in foundation relations, preferably in a university or medical center setting, or a combination of education and experience. Excellent analytical and writing skills; a flexible, highly-motivated and dedicated approach to their work; an ability to work as part of a team; and a sense of humor are desired traits. Computer literacy and ability to master Advancement and other UR systems is essential.
